Oils by Stephanie McMahon

Stephanie McMahon’s simple title evokes several interpretations that can simultaneously be applied to McMahon’s body of gestural abstract paintings. Most directly, Brush refers to the way the paintings are made, formed by decisive, gestural brushstrokes. A light and fleeting touch is another definition of the word brush embodied in her paintings through the thin, translucent paint quality. Brush also refers to the unruly and tangled natural world found in and around where McMahon lives in rural Western, NY. Her paintings reference the natural environment in color and form while, at once, directing attention to the act of painting.
