SUMMARY:Samara Joy
DESCRIPTION:Samara Joy\nWith a voice as smooth as velvet\, Samara Joy’s star seems to rise with each performance. Following her winning the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition\, she has just release her debut recording\, featuring guitarist Pasquale Grasso\, bassist Ari Roland\, and drummer Kenny Washington. \nAlthough having only recently celebrated her 21st birthday\, Samara has already performed in many of the great jazz venues in NYC\, including Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola\, The Blue Note\, and Mezzrow\, in addition to working with jazz greats such as Christian McBride\, Pasquale Grasso\, Kirk Lightsey\, Cyrus Chestnut\, and NEA Jazz Master Dr. Barry Harris. \nGrowing up in New York\, music was a pervasive presence\, due to the inspiration of her paternal grandparents\, Elder Goldwire and Ruth McLendon\, who led the well-known Philadelphia-based gospel group\, The Savettes. Her father toured with the renowned Gospel artist Andrae Crouch\, and her home was filled with the sounds of not only her father’s songs and songwriting process\, but the inspiration of many Gospel and R&B artists\, including Stevie Wonder\, Lalah Hathaway\, George Duke\, Musiq Soulchild\, Kim Burrell\, Commissioned\, and many others. \nSamara’s first exposure to jazz was while attending Fordham High School for the Arts\, where she performed regularly with the jazz band\, eventually winning Best Vocalist at JALC’s Essentially Ellington competition. \nWinning the Vaughan award was transformational for Joy. “I was suddenly on the jazz radar. It’s still bizarre to think of how fast things have progressed.” Since then\, Joy has dug deep to discover her jazz roots\, without losing sight of the innate simplicity that makes her sound shine. Her first album announces the arrival of a young artist destined for greatness. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Artist's Website

SUMMARY:Vanderlei Pereira & Blindfold Test
DESCRIPTION:Vanderlei Pereira & Blindfold Test\nVanderlei was born into a musical family in Macaé\, Brazil\, a coastal city a little over 100 miles north of Rio de Janeiro and began playing professionally as a teenager. He moved to Rio as a young man\, where he pursued a multifaceted career in jazz\, popular\, and classical music\, including a six-year performance internship with the renowned Orquesta Sinfónica Brasiliera (OSB). \nAs Vanderlei’s inherited retinitis pigmentosa progressed and his vision deteriorated\, he realized he could no longer continue working in the classical realm\, and proceeded to dedicate himself full-time to playing jazz and other non-classical forms of music. He came to be known as one of the top jazz drummers in Rio\,as well as being a highly regarded player of samba and MPB\, working steadily even after he lost his sight completely. \nHe moved to New York City in 1988\, and quickly became an in-demand drummer on the New York Brazilian music scene. His versatility has enabled him to shine in performances and recordings with numerous outstanding artists\, including Toots Thielemans\, Airto Moreira and Flora Purim\, Sivuca\, Johnny Alf\, Dom Salvador\, Tito Puente\, Leny Andrade\, Rosa Passos\, Paul Winter\, Arturo O’Farrill’s Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra\, Claudio Roditi\, Bebel Gilberto\, and many others. \nWhen asked about the challenges of being a blind musician\, Vanderlei says: “I try to keep a positive attitude. I had to deal with losing my vision while continuing to work full-time as a musician. It took over twenty years to truly accept my blindness and develop the ability to see the positive things in everyday life. I try as much as I can to share some of that optimism with everyone I interact with daily. I would hate to think that people feel sorry for me because of my visual impairment. I’m blind\, but so what? I’ve still got music and my own way of seeing things\, thank God. I try to channel that energy and I think it comes through in my playing.” \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Artist's Website

SUMMARY:Jazz Around Town: Dylan Perrillo & Brad Brose @ The East Cove
DESCRIPTION:Bassist\, Dylan Perrillo (from Hot Club of Saratoga and the Dylan Perrillo Quartet) will be joined by NYC-based guitarist Brad Brose for a one-of-a-kind jazz experience that will have fans of gypsy and swing jazz moving in their seats.  \nAbout Dylan Perrillo: Dylan grew up in the sunshiny village of Voorheesville\, New York where was he fortunate enough to have participated in their wonderful music program beginning in primary school. Originally having played guitar at the age of seven\, he found that his skills were rendered useless when his older brother\, Tyler\, began playing guitar as well. Thus\, it became clear to the young lad that switching over to the electric bass was necessary. When Dylan entered his studies at Schenectady County Community College he began to learn to play the upright bass and began playing with musicians from around the capital district. SUMMARY:Naya Baaz: Rez Abbasi & Josh Feinberg
DESCRIPTION:Awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2021 for composition\, Voted #1 Rising-Star Guitarist in the 2013 DownBeat Critics Poll and subsequently placed in the top-ten guitarists alongside luminaries Bill Frisell and Pat Metheny\, guitarist and composer Rez Abbasi is one of the most original voices on the current scene. \nBorn in Karachi\, Pakistan\, removed at the age of four to the vastness of Southern California\, schooled at the University of Southern California and the Manhattan School of Music in jazz and classical music\, along with a pilgrimage in India under the guidance of master percussionist\, Ustad Alla Rakha\, Rez Abbasi is a vivid synthesis of all the above stated influences and genres. Making New York home for the past 25 years\, Abbasi is considered by many to be one of the foremost modern jazz guitar players the world over. He has honed his skills with performances throughout Europe\, Canada\, the U.S.\, Mexico and India and has performed and recorded with many jazz greats including\, Grammy winner Ruth Brown\, Peter Erskine\, Kenny Werner\, Barre Phillips\, Tim Berne\, Michael Formanek\, Billy Hart\, Gary Thomas\, Dave Douglas\, Rudresh Mahanthappa\, Mike Clark\, Tim Hagans\, John Beasly\, Ronu Majumdar\, Kadri Gopalnath\, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt\, Vijay Iyer\, Marilyn Crispell\, Greg Osby\, Howard Levy and a host of others. \nWith 14 albums of mostly original compositions under his belt\, Abbasi continues to find new groups of musicians to help his musical vision come to life. His 2005 recording Snake Charmer\, created a stir in the music world partly due to his organic\, original approach in blending two complex musical genres together\, namely jazz and Indian music. The provocative instrumentation of organ\, drums and guitar alongside Indian vocalist Kiran Ahluwalia\, is on one hand\, a sound grounded in jazz and yet uncommon in jazz arenas. 20th Century Guitar reviewed the CD as\, “One of the best examples yet of how to merge Indian Classical music with jazz…Snake Charmer really breaks new ground.” In 2007\, Rez achieved even greater heights with the follow up to Snake Charmer\, Bazaar. Bazaar continues the group’s journey through territories unheard in today’s jazz/world music scene.

SUMMARY:Richie Goods / Chien Chien “Connected”
DESCRIPTION:“CONNECTED” was formed in 2020. During the COVID-19 lockdown\, Richie Goods and Chien Chien had frequent conversations about the Black Lives Matter movement and the unwarranted hate crimes against Asians. They decided to do a project that would unify people and invoke imagery of love and peace. As often happens\, music was the catalyst that bridged the gap and resulted in a rare collaboration; a partnership that produced “The Path” Sep. 2020\, “We Three Kings” Nov. 2020\, and “Rain” Dec. 2021. They decided to cement their musical relationship by creating “CONNECTED”\, Together\, Richie and Chien Chien create an exciting\, new\, energetic listening experience and attract new audiences everywhere. Their new release\, “Richie Goods & Chien Chien – CONNECTED” was released January 13 2023 and has been on the jazz week charts for 12 weeks. \nCrazy as it seems\, somehow during the shutdown we felt more free and inspired to create. Through all the chaos and violence\, we wanted to do a project that would unify people and invoke imagery of love and peace. We realized one of our pieces\, Donnie Hathaway’s “Someday We’ll All Be Free” does just that. It speaks of freedom and balance. \nWe believe we all share one energy\, one connection. \nXOXO\, Richie & Chien \n“Rarely does an album come about that defines an era but Connected is one such album. As Billie Holiday gave us Strange Fruit and Gil Scott Heron gave us Small Talk at 125th & Lenox\, Richie Goods and Chien Chien’s Connected is a musical historical landmark for our time.” — Andromeda Turre (Sirius Xm real jazz host)

SUMMARY:Emilio Solla & the Tango Jazz Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Saxophones: Alejandro Aviles\, Todd Bashore\, John Ellis\, Jeremy Powell\, Terry Goss\nTrumpets: Vitaly Golonev\, Jim Seeley\, John Bailey\, Rachel Terrien\nTrombones: Noah Bless\, Eric Miller\, Mike Fahie\, James Rodgers\nRhythm: Emilio Solla (p)\, Pablo Aslan (b)\, Ferenc Nemeth (d) \nLatin Grammy winner and multi-Grammy nominee\, Argentine-born and New York-based pianist and composer Emilio Solla’s first band\, Apertura\, (1983-1989) was praised by Astor Piazzolla as one of the most interesting new sounds in the Buenos Aires scene in 1986. Today\, with eleven CDs as bandleader and more than forty as arranger/producer\, he is regarded by peers and critics as one of the most outstanding and unique composers in the Tango-Jazz field\, a musical language which blends Argentine tango and folk with jazz and other contemporary music styles. He has performed all around Europe\, Japan\, the US and Latin America to rave reviews in many of the most important jazz houses and festivals\, such as Bim Huis\, Lincoln Center\, Marciac\, Blue Note\, Fasching and more. \nSolla moved to New York in 2006\, and since then he has composed for\, recorded and toured with Paquito D’Rivera\, Arturo O’Farrill\, Edmar Castañeda\, Cristina Pato and many others jazz and classical music greats\, besides performing regularly with his different projects at the Jazz Standard\, Jazz at Lincoln Center and Birdland. Former members of his bands include jazz stars Donny Mc Caslin\, Omer Avital\, Jorge Rossy\, Jeff Ballard and more. \nHe continues to tour Europe and the US while working as a free-lance arranger and pianist in different projects in NY. His NY based quintet Bien Sur! released its first CD in 2010 with special guest Billy Hart. This album was included in the Best of 2010 list by Downbeat Magazine. Since November 2010\, he is leading a nine piece orchestra\, La Inestable de Brooklyn\, featuring some of the strongest jazz players in NYC. Their first CD\, Second Half (2015) was Nominated for a Grammy Award as Best Latin Jazz Album. In November 2014 Solla’s first symphonic work had its World Premiere at the Palau de la Musica\, during the Barcelona Jazz Festival and its US Premier at the Chicago Symphony Hall. 2017 took him back to Buenos Aires for the Premiere of the symphonic version of his Suite Piazzollana. In 2018\, he started composing for a new project\, the Tango Jazz Orchestra\, a 17-piece big band\, taking his blend of Latin American sounds and jazz to a whole new level of accomplishment. This orchestra released its first album\, “Puertos” on August 28\, 2019. This album won the Latin Grammy 2020 for Best Jazz Album and one of Solla’s compositions\, La Novena\, was awarded a Grammy Nomination in 2019 as Best Instrumental Arrangement. \nThe Tango Jazz Orchestra (TJO) is Emilio’s most ambitious project to date. A full 17-piece jazz orchestra which replaces the guitar by a bandoneon. This large ensemble has allowed Solla to take his blend of tango and Latin American music with jazz to a whole new level of accomplishment. The orchestra recorded and released its first work\, “Puertos\, Music of International Waters” in 2019. One of Solla’s compositions was nominated that same year for a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement (sharing the honor with Vince Mendoza\, John Williams and Jacob Collier) and the full album was awarded the 2020 Latin Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album.

SUMMARY:Dylan Perrillo & Ryan Sullivan @ The Inn of Lake George
DESCRIPTION:About Dylan & Ryan\nBassist\, Dylan Perrillo (from Hot Club of Saratoga and the Dylan Perrillo Quartet) will be joined by Ryan Sullivan for a one-of-a-kind jazz experience that will have fans of gypsy and swing jazz moving in their seats. \nAbout Dylan Perrillo: Dylan grew up in the sunshiny village of Voorheesville\, New York where he was fortunate enough to have participated in their wonderful music program beginning in primary school. Since then\, he has had the pleasure of performing with some really great people from all over the country. \nAbout Ryan Sullivan: Ryan Sullivan is a vibrant multi-instrumentalist from upstate New York who has honed his craft on the streets of New Orleans serenading many-a passersby and delighting audiences from all over the world. His unique approach and enthusiasm gives new life to the old beat of yesteryear’s sounds. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The Inn of Lake GeorgeThe Lobby Bar\n12 McGillis Avenue Lake George\, NY 12845518.668.4442 \nLobby Bar is a classic\, intimate cocktail lounge offering a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy handcrafted cocktails. SUMMARY:The Arch Stanton Trio @ Gaslight
DESCRIPTION:The Arch Stanton Trio\nThe Arch Stanton Trio is a guitar-led version of the band’s acclaimed quartet. Based in upstate New York\, the band performs original jazz that is experimental\, yet rooted in bop and post-bop traditions. \nTheir debut album of original compositions\, Along For The Ride\, was released in November 2012 on WEPA Records. “With one foot in the timeless traditions of bop\, and the other about to set down on something new\,” the group “is as mysterious as its name\, with killer players that aren’t afraid to go out on a limb\, right to the very end\,” wrote Dave Malachowski in his review for The Daily Freeman. \nIn March 2013 the band embarked on a tour of Egypt\, performing at the Cairo Jazz Festival and other gigs. The trip was sponsored by the educational organization AMIDEAST\, the U.S. Embassy Cairo\, and the Center for American Studies at the American University in Cairo. That same year\, the band opened for Charlie Hunter and Oleta Adams at the Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival. \nDrawing from their experiences in Egypt\, the group\, in October 2014\, released a nine-song sophomore album\, Blues For Soli (also on WEPA Records)\, which includes a suite of music directly influenced by their Egypt tour. In a review of the album for Metroland\, Jeff Nania writes: “This record serves to showcase the evolution of a local group’s compositional style as they continue to go beyond bop and incorporate further cultural influences into their sound.” \nIn 2016\, the band performed at the Bridge Jazz Festival at the Massry Center in Albany\, opening for Ellis and Delfeayo Marsalis of the famed Marsalis family\, the “first family” of New Orleans Jazz. \nThe band has been a regular fixture of the Capital Region jazz club scene. It is currently planning material for its third album\, which will include a suite of compositions inspired by Ralph Ellison’s novel Invisible Man and other original pieces. \n \n Listen\, Watch\, & Learn More About The Arch Stanton Trio\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Gaslight. Wood Fired Bistro\n91 Canada StreetLake George\, NY 12801518.685.3487 \n“Really enjoyed this place\, for many reasons. First\, the menu is great\, there’s a wide array of dishes available. I opted for the wood fired pizza and it was really delicious\, I was very pleased with our choices. Second\, the staff here is wonderful. I dined at the bar and had a chance to talk to several of the staff; they were all friendly and knowledgable- I really appreciated this. Third\, the owner came over and chatted with me and asked me how my meal was\, that’s uncommon and it’s a mark of a good establishment. Finally\, Gaslight has a great\, accessible\, location and a really warm and interesting atmosphere. Check it out when you’re in Lake George\, I believe you won’t be disappointed. SUMMARY:Nook & Cranny @ The Barnsider
DESCRIPTION:About Nook & Cranny\nNook & Cranny is made up of two musicians from Upstate New York\, Angelina Valente and JP Hubbs. Valente studied Musical Theatre in college and Hubbs studied Piano. They were introduced in 2017 when they began making music together when in an eight piece bluegrass band. They had a connection and love of all kinds of music that sparked the duo’s desire to see what they could become on their own. You’ll find them covering standards\, discovering new jazz\, writing their own\, and bringing all sorts of guests up to the stage to make the band bigger and better each time they play. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n THE BARNSIDER SMOKEHOUSE BBQ\n2112 U.S. 9 Lake George\, NY 12845518.668.5268 \nWith thirty two years of smokin’ and sauce slingin’ under our belt\, we know low and slow. With all the time that we’ve had to learn and grow\, we treat the art of barbecue with the respect it deserves. Our sauce and meat rubs are homemade\, and our meats are seasoned and cooked to perfection. SUMMARY:Ria Curley\, Chuck Lamb & The Curley Lamb Nu-Soul-Jaz Quartet @ The Caldwell-Lake George Library
DESCRIPTION:Ria Curley\, Chuck Lamb & The Curley Lamb Nu-Soul-Jaz Quartet\nSinger/songwriter Ria Curley (melodic\, vocal R&B/Pop/Rock) and pianist/composer Chuck Lamb (instrumental Jazz/Fusion) are music and life partners (husband and wife)\, who compose and perform music\, both individually and together — the latter\, with usual bandmates Brad Monkell (bass) and Sam Zucchini (drums)\, as “The Curley Lamb Nu-Soul-Jaz Quartet.” \nRia Curley is an accomplished singer/songwriter/composer (music and lyrics)\, known for her silky voice\, groove-oriented R&B originals and “nu-jazz” standards. Ria is honored to have 22 of her original songs signed to publishing giant\, Warner/Chappell Music Int’l. \nChuck Lamb has been the pianist for the Brubeck Brothers Quartet for more than two decades and has composed for and played with the Quartet all over the world\, including Lincoln Center; the Newport\, Detroit\, Monterrey\, Bern and Saratoga Jazz Festivals; the Blue Note in Tokyo; Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow; Singapore with the Chinese National Orchestra; and more. When Chuck is not on tour with the Brubeck Brothers Quartet\, he performs regularly with his own ensembles\, including monthly as Jazz Artist-in-Residence for the highly acclaimed “Jazz at Caffe Lena” music series\, which Chuck cofounded in 2017 with producer extraordinaire\, Joel Moss\, in Saratoga Springs\, NY. \nTogether\, Ria and Chuck recently entered the world of television and film music and obtained a prime placement for one of their original songs in the opening monologue of the HBO MAX standup comedy special\, “Everything Must Go\,” starring Emmy-nominated Hannah Einbinder (of the Emmy-winning HBO MAX series\, “Hacks”). The couple also obtained three original song placements in the acclaimed documentary film\, “Exergue on documenta 14\,” which premiered at the esteemed Berlinale International Film Festival and received enthusiastic reviews. Ria’s single\, “Wanna Be There\,” received a nomination for “Record of the Year” at the 2024 Capital District Eddies Music Awards (“Eddies”). And Chuck took home the 2024 Eddies Music award for “Jazz Artist of the Year.” \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The Caldwell Lake George Library\n336 Canada StLake George\, NY 12845518.668.2528 \nA treasure in Lake George\, The Caldwell Lake George Library’s collection dates back to the 1880s when it was bequeathed after the death of local resident DeWitt Clinton Hay. The library’s building was constructed in 1906\, and the original librarian\, Mary Hubbell\, served the community until 1958.
