As often happens\, music was the catalyst that bridged the gap and resulted in a rare collaboration; a partnership that produced “The Path” Sep. 2020\, “We Three Kings” Nov. 2020\, and “Rain” Dec. 2021. They decided to cement their musical relationship by creating “CONNECTED”\, Together\, Richie and Chien Chien create an exciting\, new\, energetic listening experience and attract new audiences everywhere. Today\, with eleven CDs as bandleader and more than forty as arranger/producer\, he is regarded by peers and critics as one of the most outstanding and unique composers in the Tango-Jazz field\, a musical language which blends Argentine tango and folk with jazz and other contemporary music styles. He has performed all around Europe\, Japan\, the US and Latin America to rave reviews in many of the most important jazz houses and festivals\, such as Bim Huis\, Lincoln Center\, Marciac\, Blue Note\, Fasching and more. \nSolla moved to New York in 2006\, and since then he has composed for\, recorded and toured with Paquito D’Rivera\, Arturo O’Farrill\, Edmar Castañeda\, Cristina Pato and many others jazz and classical music greats\, besides performing regularly with his different projects at the Jazz Standard\, Jazz at Lincoln Center and Birdland. Former members of his bands include jazz stars Donny Mc Caslin\, Omer Avital\, Jorge Rossy\, Jeff Ballard and more. \nHe continues to tour Europe and the US while working as a free-lance arranger and pianist in different projects in NY. His NY based quintet Bien Sur! released its first CD in 2010 with special guest Billy Hart. This album was included in the Best of 2010 list by Downbeat Magazine. Since November 2010\, he is leading a nine piece orchestra\, La Inestable de Brooklyn\, featuring some of the strongest jazz players in NYC. Their first CD\, Second Half (2015) was Nominated for a Grammy Award as Best Latin Jazz Album. In November 2014 Solla’s first symphonic work had its World Premiere at the Palau de la Musica\, during the Barcelona Jazz Festival and its US Premier at the Chicago Symphony Hall. 2017 took him back to Buenos Aires for the Premiere of the symphonic version of his Suite Piazzollana. In 2018\, he started composing for a new project\, the Tango Jazz Orchestra\, a 17-piece big band\, taking his blend of Latin American sounds and jazz to a whole new level of accomplishment. This orchestra released its first album\, “Puertos” on August 28\, 2019. This album won the Latin Grammy 2020 for Best Jazz Album and one of Solla’s compositions\, La Novena\, was awarded a Grammy Nomination in 2019 as Best Instrumental Arrangement. \nThe Tango Jazz Orchestra (TJO) is Emilio’s most ambitious project to date. A full 17-piece jazz orchestra which replaces the guitar by a bandoneon. Within two years of exploring the instrument\, he began winning various competitions including Best High School Jazz Soloist Award and the National YoungArts Competition. By the age of 18 years old\, he was recognized and followed by many world-renowned musicians including Yebba Smith\, Jill Scott\, Robert Glasper\, Cory Henry\, Jacob Collier\, Stanley Clarke\, and Derrick Hodge\, among others. Jahari has toured with Stanley Clarke and is featured on Derrick Hodge’s “Color of Noise” album. \nJahari has performed in venues such as Radio City Music Hall in NYC\, The Met Philadelphia\, Byline Bank Aragon in Chicago\, Carnegie Hall in NY\, San Francisco Jazz Center\, and MANY others. He’s also headlined & performed solo piano tours in Berlin\, Koethen & Magdeburg\, Germany\, Geneva\, Switzerland\, and Los Angeles\, California. He’s conducted music workshops in Santa Ana\, Costa Rica\, and taught masterclasses in Spokane\, Washington. Jahari is also the band leader & featured pianist playing the part of Bill Wither’s keyboardist in the feature film “Spinning Gold”. Many of Jahari’s performances have garnered praise in various media outlets\, articles & magazines throughout the world. \nJahari won first place in the 2023 Herbie Hancock Institute International Competition\, 2023 Chicagoan of the Year in Jazz\, 2023 Chicago Youth Symphony Alumni Award\, the first non-classical musician to receive the honor; and awarded the 2023 Luminarts Fellowship for his debut album “ Still Listening.” Earlier in his life Jahari won the  Bösendorfer prize for the international 2019 American Jazz Pianists Association Competition (for ages 18-25)\, the 2018 ASCAP Foundation Fran Morganstern Davis Scholarship\, and the National Young Arts Foundation 2018 Young Arts Winner. \nAlongside all of this\, Jahari released his first Debut Album entitled “Still Listening” which rose to #1 on Apple iTunes in the first weeks of the Album’s release. Based in upstate New York\, the band performs original jazz that is experimental\, yet rooted in bop and post-bop traditions. \nTheir debut album of original compositions\, Along For The Ride\, was released in November 2012 on WEPA Records. “With one foot in the timeless traditions of bop\, and the other about to set down on something new\,” the group “is as mysterious as its name\, with killer players that aren’t afraid to go out on a limb\, right to the very end\,” wrote Dave Malachowski in his review for The Daily Freeman. \nIn March 2013 the band embarked on a tour of Egypt\, performing at the Cairo Jazz Festival and other gigs. The trip was sponsored by the educational organization AMIDEAST\, the U.S. Embassy Cairo\, and the Center for American Studies at the American University in Cairo. That same year\, the band opened for Charlie Hunter and Oleta Adams at the Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival. \nDrawing from their experiences in Egypt\, the group\, in October 2014\, released a nine-song sophomore album\, Blues For Soli (also on WEPA Records)\, which includes a suite of music directly influenced by their Egypt tour. In a review of the album for Metroland\, Jeff Nania writes: “This record serves to showcase the evolution of a local group’s compositional style as they continue to go beyond bop and incorporate further cultural influences into their sound.” \nIn 2016\, the band performed at the Bridge Jazz Festival at the Massry Center in Albany\, opening for Ellis and Delfeayo Marsalis of the famed Marsalis family\, the “first family” of New Orleans Jazz. \nThe band has been a regular fixture of the Capital Region jazz club scene. He returned over the years with his Emerge Trio\, the WORKS Trio with Joe Lovano\, and his multimedia collaboration with The Seeing with Photography Collective\, Blind Visionaries\, inaugurating the first Friday evening Jazz at the Lake performance. \nAn artist who explores the meeting place of music with literature\, visual art and journalism with his various projects\, Daniel has created several works that incorporate poetry\, including All the World’s a Song: Shakespeare in Jazz\, which interprets Shakespeare’s words as lyrics to jazz songs. \nIn honor of the 40th anniversary of the festival\, Daniel uses the poetry of Paul Pines as inspiration for the music for this year’s performance. Paul\, who founded the Lake George Jazz Weekend along with John Strong in 1984\, was a dear friend to Daniel. He previously collaborated with Paul in his final months in 2018\, composing settings for poems from his book Gathering Sparks in a 45-minute suite scored for a jazz septet titled Museum of the Infinite. This year\, Daniel will explore Paul’s poetry throughout his writing career\, anthologized in the collection A Furnace in the Shadows: Selected Poems. \nKelly’s music has been declared “powerfully moving” by Time Out New York. He has performed with Grammy-award winners Joe Lovano & Nicole Zuraitis\, hip-hop star Lauryn Hill\, cutting-edge modern classical The Bang on a Can All-Stars and a long list of jazz musicians such as NEA Jazz Masters Dave Liebman & Sheila Jordan\, Don Byron\, Donny McCaslin\, Bobby Sanabria and many others. \nRakonto\, Kelly’s series of interview-based concerts\, have been commissioned by 13 performing art centers across the US. Linda also was voted 2019 Bassist of the Year in Hothouse Magazine and was the 2020 recipient APRA award for Best New Jazz Work. In 2023 she received the prestigious Herb Albert Award for music. \nLinda has had five releases as a leader which have received critical acclaim\, her latest – a quintet album entitled The Glass Hours on Biophilia Records. Her latest commissions include “Littoral Tales” a solo piano piece in two movements for Gloria Cheng\, and “Ephemeral Echoes” written for percussion trio and piano trio as well as “Mirrors and Shadows” written for piano and bass duo. \nLinda has written for large and small ensembles as well as for film\, participating in the Sundance Labs at Skywalker Ranch and composing for several of sociologist/film maker Sabrina McCormick. A Software Engineer by day\, his extensive and varied freelance work has included many church services\, and numerous weddings with organizations including Steven Scott Orchestras\, Avenue K Entertainment\, Hal Prince Music\, and The New York Players. \nSteve has played countless jazz gigs over the years with groups including Doc Scanlon’s Rhythm Boys\, the World Music ensemble Heard\, and The Trojan Horns Brass Band. He’s also worked with saxophonist Hugh Brodie and pianists Peg Delaney\, John Esposito\, Larry Ham and Peter Tomlinson\, on whose CD of original music Steve is included. \nSteve is also a proud participant in the local Gypsy Jazz community which celebrates the music of Django Reinhardt. He is a member of the bands Gadjo and Helderberg Hot Club and he subs with the Hot Club of Saratoga. \nPianist and keyboardist Wayne Hawkins has a discography of over 40 recordings\, including his work as leader on the critically acclaimed Wayne Hawkins Trio and his more recently released Solo. He wrote the book Piano Aerobics for Hal Leonard Publishing\, teaching contemporary technique in popular styles. He was on the University of Kansas faculty for 8 years\, and currently teaches at Skidmore College. \nAs Music Director of his church\, Wayne recently presented a unique event called “Chant Meets Jazz\,” where cantors sang traditional sacred chants\, followed by a jazz quartet performing his original arrangements of the material. \nWayne moved east from Kansas City\, where he played for 10 years with the band Sons of Brasil. He studied composition with Jovino Santos Neto\, who was composer\, arranger\, and producer for the great Brazilian band leader Hermeto Pascoal. Wayne brings his uniquely valuable experience to Bossamba as pianist\, arranger\, and co-leader with vocalist Maggie MacDougall. \n\n \n\nMike Lawrence is a Capital Region bassist and has been a public school music educator for over 20 years. He can primarily be seen performing with Art D’echo Trio alongside Dave Gleason and Pete Sweeney\, the annual It’s a Jazzy Christmas and weekly Jazz Vespers at First Reformed Church in Schenectady. \n\n \n\nMike played on the album “Circulation: The Music of Gary McFarland” (one of NPR’s Best Jazz Albums of 2015) and performed previously at Jazz at the Lake with the Gary McFarland Legacy Ensemble. He has also recorded with Michael Benedict’s Jazz Vibes “1-2-3 Go!” (2022); Michael Benedict’s Bopitude “Five and One” (2012) featuring Gary Smulyan; and Joe Finn’s “As Luck Would Have It” (2021). \n\n \nMike has performed live in concert with Evan Christopher\, Gary Smulyan\, Michael Benedict\, Chris Pasin\, Brian Patneaude\, Harry Allen\, Paul Meyers\, Dick Oatts\, Sharel Cassity\, Steve Nelson\, Gene Bertoncini\, the late Claire Daly\, Bruce Johnstone\, Jerry Weldon\, Ray Vega\, Wycliffe Gordon\, Blue Lou Marini\, Sonny Turner’s Platters\, and Bobby Rydell among many others. Tony has appeared on all eight of Bright Dog Red’s Ropeadope album releases to date\, and is currently writing his first symphony. \nJim Ketterer is a drummer and percussionist based in upstate New York and has spent several years living in the Middle East and North Africa. The album embodies the collective sound of Miami: a blend of Latin pop\, timba\, salsa\, bachata\, tango\, reggaeton\, and bolero. Reminiscent of the city’s diverse Latino community\, the album calls upon Rodriguez’s roots just as much as his newly-learned experiences.  \nIn his new home\, Rodriguez took note of the limited cross-pollination and few collaborations that existed between mainstream Latin music and Latin jazz. Coral Way\, which features guest vocalists Cimafunk and Alana Sinkëy\, serves as the connective tissue between these worlds—an artistic statement for the diverse Latin community to be seen\, be heard\, and take pride in their history\, while creating community through individuality. \nRodriguez notes\, “I play what I live\, and Coral Way is my new life. It is the name of the street on which\, for the past 3 years\, I have been composing this album\, and now I’m excited that people from all over the world will finally get to hear it in an expansive way\, with a full live band.” \nBorn and raised in Havana\, Cuba\, Rodriguez’s world was confined by the numerous restrictions imposed by his country. With limited options\, his parents enrolled him in a classical conservatory\, but he was quickly shut down by his first teacher who declared him devoid of talent. Despite pushback\, his love for piano grew so strong that he wasn’t even deterred by not having a piano to practice on at home; instead\, he painted piano keys on his parents’ dinner table so he could run his scales. \nIn 2006\, at age 19\, he received an invitation to represent Cuba at the Montreux Jazz Festival (MJF) in the International Solo Piano Competition. After applying and auditioning as a composer\, alongside twelve of the top pianists in the world\, he was accepted and made his way to Switzerland\, where he ended up being invited to festival founder Claude Nobs’ chalet to play for the guests\, one of whom happened to be legendary producer Quincy Jones. Upon Jones’ return to Los Angeles\, he couldn’t get Alfredo out of his mind. He called his VP\, Adam Fell\, and explained that Alfredo was one of the best pianists he had ever seen and they needed to work with him. Little did they know\, Alfredo had only received permission to travel to Switzerland to play in the competition (as it was difficult for Cubans to obtain a travel visa)\, and also learned it would be illegal to work with him due to the Cuban embargo. \nCubans were not allowed to work in the U.S.\, and could only arrive at U.S. border stations to seek political asylum—meaning that Alfredo would have to relinquish his Cuban citizenship and jeopardize his ability to return home until he obtained a green card. After a year and a half of contemplating\, he mustered up the courage and made the difficult decision to leave his family behind for a country that could offer him the platform he needed to share the broader message of his music with more people. \nIt’s evident the journey was worth it because not only has Alfredo earned frequent appearances on prestigious stages around the world such as the Playboy Jazz Festival\, North Sea Jazz Festival\, Jazz in Marciac\, Umbria Jazz and \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJazz A Vienne\, but additionally\, Rodriguez was nominated for a Grammy® in the category of “Best Arrangement\, Instrumental or A Cappella\,” for the track “Guantanamera\,” from his album\, The Invasion Parade. Additionally\, during his first tour in China\, Rodriguez was asked to work with Tan Dun\, Siedah Garrett\, and Quincy Jones to compose the English version of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo theme song\, becoming the first non-Chinese artist to be bestowed this honor.
