SUMMARY:David Gilmore Quartet
DESCRIPTION:About David Gilmore\nOver the past decade guitarist and composer David Gilmore has recorded and performed with some of the most highly influential and innovative artists in modern music today including Wayne Shorter\, Dave Douglas\, Muhal Richard Abrams\, Sam Rivers\, Steve Coleman\, Don Byron\, Cassandra Wilson\, Uri Caine\, Randy Brecker and David Sanborn. He has appeared on over 50 recordings and been a major presence on the international touring scene. In the Spring of 2001 he released his first recording as a leader entitled Ritualism\, which has already received major international critical appraise and was nominated for Debut CD of the Year in 2001 by the Jazz Journalists Association. Mr. Gilmore was also recently voted into the Rising Stars category in DownBeat Magazine’s Critic’s Poll. \nBorn and raised in Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, Gilmore sought out music at a young age experimenting with piano\, drums and percussion before discovering the guitar at the age of 15. After a few years of private study with Boston local guitar gurus John Baboian and Randy Roos\, Gilmore moved to New York to attend New York University\, where he studied under the tutelage of sax titan Joe Lovano and pianist Jim McNeely. Shortly after his graduation in 1987\, Gilmore began touring and recording in earnest with many of the members of the fledging M-Base Collective\, and soon after began to find himself in many other diverse musical situations\, recording and/ or touring with Ronald Shannon Jackson\, Trilok Gurtu\, Graham Haynes\, Robin Eubanks\, and Lonnie Plaxico. In the early 1990’s he became an active member of the popular jazz/fusion group Lost Tribe\, co-producing their first two recordings for the Windham Hill Label. \nOver the years he has also lent his skills to a variety of pop/ commercial acts including Japan’s Monday Michiru\, Me’shell N’Degeocello\, Melissa Etheridge\, Joan Osbourne\, Mavis Staples\, Issac Hayes\, Boz Scaggs\, Tommy Lang of Austria\, Rise Robots Rise\, and toured extensively with multi-platinum selling artist Joss Stone. In 1995 Gilmore got the call to join sax legend Wayne Shorter’s group\, and appears on Mr. Shorter’s Grammy Award winning album\, High Life on Verve. He can be found most recently on recordings by Christian McBride\, Carolyn Leonhart\, Don Byron\, Ron Blake and Uri Caine. \nAs a composer\, improviser and guitarist\, Gilmore is committed to pushing the boundaries of improvisational music\, at the same time without alienating the uninitiated listener. His music reflects the diverse musical influences and experiences he has assimilated throughout his career. The exploration of rhythm is a major component of his music\, utilizing many non-Western approaches and integrating them into a modern framework. Gilmore was a recipient of the Chamber Music America New Works Composer Grant\, enabling him to compose a commisioned work entitled “African Continuum” which was performed in public in the Spring and Fall of 2003. His playing has been compared to guitarists with styles as diverse as George Benson\, Wes Montgomery\, Jimi Hendrix and Leo Nocentelli. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n David Gilmore – guitarLuis Perdomo – pianoBrad Jones- bassE.J. SUMMARY:Edmar Castañeda Quartet
DESCRIPTION:About Edmar Castañeda\nEdmar Castañeda nominated for a Latin Grammy in the category “Best Latin Jazz Album” with his album Family.  \nUpon arriving in the United States in 1994\, Colombian-born Edmar Castañeda has made a name for himself as the preeminent jazz harp virtuoso. Castañeda brings forth a brilliance that beautifully merges the jazz tradition with a diverse set of styles and genres while bringing unbridled attention to a somewhat unfamiliar instrument: the harp. Singlehandedly\, Castañeda has cemented the harp’s place in jazz with innovative technique and heartfelt creativity from a wealth of formidable collaborations with music titans such as Wynyton Marsalis\, Bela Fleck\, John Scofield\, Ricki Lee Jones\, Hiromi\, Pedrito Martinez\, Marcus Miller\, Gonzalo Rubalcaba\, Ivan Lins\, The Yellowjackets\, Paco De Lucia\, and Paquito D’Rivera.  \nIn the same breath as the Yo-Yo Ma’s of the world\, Castañeda fearlessly stuns audiences\, musicians\, and critics alike with his incredible talents as a player and composer. NPR’s “Fresh Air” touts\, “…his technique is the real astonishment. Castañeda juggles lead\, rhythm and bass lines\, using a variety of hard and soft string attacks to keep those voices distinct — all without giving up the groove…His amazing technique…raises the bar for every harpist.” The New York Times notes\, “…Castaneda… engage[s] modern jazz in ways that honor…cultural origins\, and [he has] the capacity to astonish by virtue of [his] fingerstyle technique.” Moses Sumney highlights his “5 Favorite NPR “Tiny Desk Concerts” and says\, “My brain cracked open when I first saw this. Some classical instruments are so ingrained in our heads for sounding one way; Edmar restructures what we know of harp\, defiantly expanding the bounds of the instrument.”  \nCastañeda follows up seven acclaimed albums (Cuarto de Colores; Entre Cuerdas; Double Portion; Live at the Jazz Standard; Live In Montreal; Harp vs. Harp; Family ) with his latest recording project\, Viento Sur\, with a nine-person ensemble of acclaimed global musicians from Switzerland\, Brazil\, Cuba\, Israel\, Chile\, USA\, Argentina\, and Colombia. An array of compositions on Viento Sur are commissioned by American Chamber Music from the “New Jazz Works Grant.”  \nCastañeda’s renowned albums as a bandleader are interchanged with awe-inspiring symphonic and bigband works likes Wynton Marsalis Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra\, Clássica de Espinho and the São Paulo Jazz Symphony Orchestra\, and chamber pieces for the Israel Camerata Jerusalem and the Orquestra Sinfónica Nacional de Colombia. \nIn fall 2021\, Castañeda’s work was released in Disney’s Encanto\, which features original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Castañeda acts on the soundtrack and served as music consultant on Encanto.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n HIS MUSIC\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Béla Fleck & Edmar Castañeda: Live at Big Ears Festival 2019 | JAZZ NIGHT IN AMERICA\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Live Sessions from Jazz at Lincoln Center: Edmar Castañeda\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Learn More about Edmar Castañeda

It includes original compositions by trumpet player Terry Gordon and guitarist Roger Noyes. \nIn March 2013 the band was named Best Local Jazz Band in the Metroland Readers Poll and embarked on a tour of Egypt\, performing at the Cairo Jazz Festival and other gigs. The trip was sponsored by the educational organization AMIDEAST\, the U.S. Embassy Cairo\, and the Center for American Studies at the American University in Cairo. That same year\, the band opened up for Charlie Hunter and Oleta Adams at the Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival. Drawing from their experiences in Egypt\, the group\, in October 2014\, released a 9-song sophomore album\, Blues For Soli (also on WEPA Records)\, which includes a suite of music directly influenced by their Egypt tour. In a review of the album for Metroland\, Jeff Nania writes: “This record serves to showcase the evolution of a local group’s compositional style as they continue to go beyond bop and incorporate further cultural influences into their sound.” \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n “The trio\, though named after the spaghetti Western film persona\, was the real deal. SUMMARY:Alfredo Rodríguez Trio
DESCRIPTION:About Alfredo\n\n\n\nGlobally acclaimed artist Alfredo Rodriguez has announced his new album Coral Way will be released on August 18 via Mack Avenue Records. The album embodies the collective sound of Miami: a blend of Latin pop\, timba\, salsa\, bachata\, tango\, reggaeton\, and bolero. Reminiscent of the city’s diverse Latino community\, the album calls upon Rodriguez’s roots just as much as his newly-learned experiences.  \nIn his new home\, Rodriguez took note of the limited cross-pollination and few collaborations that existed between mainstream Latin music and Latin jazz. Coral Way\, which features guest vocalists Cimafunk and Alana Sinkëy\, serves as the connective tissue between these worlds—an artistic statement for the diverse Latin community to be seen\, be heard\, and take pride in their history\, while creating community through individuality. \nRodriguez notes\, “I play what I live\, and Coral Way is my new life. It is the name of the street on which\, for the past 3 years\, I have been composing this album\, and now I’m excited that people from all over the world will finally get to hear it in an expansive way\, with a full live band.” \nBorn and raised in Havana\, Cuba\, Rodriguez’s world was confined by the numerous restrictions imposed by his country. With limited options\, his parents enrolled him in a classical conservatory\, but he was quickly shut down by his first teacher who declared him devoid of talent. Despite pushback\, his love for piano grew so strong that he wasn’t even deterred by not having a piano to practice on at home; instead\, he painted piano keys on his parents’ dinner table so he could run his scales. \nIn 2006\, at age 19\, he received an invitation to represent Cuba at the Montreux Jazz Festival (MJF) in the International Solo Piano Competition. After applying and auditioning as a composer\, alongside twelve of the top pianists in the world\, he was accepted and made his way to Switzerland\, where he ended up being invited to festival founder Claude Nobs’ chalet to play for the guests\, one of whom happened to be legendary producer Quincy Jones. Upon Jones’ return to Los Angeles\, he couldn’t get Alfredo out of his mind. He called his VP\, Adam Fell\, and explained that Alfredo was one of the best pianists he had ever seen and they needed to work with him. Little did they know\, Alfredo had only received permission to travel to Switzerland to play in the competition (as it was difficult for Cubans to obtain a travel visa)\, and also learned it would be illegal to work with him due to the Cuban embargo. \nCubans were not allowed to work in the U.S.\, and could only arrive at U.S. border stations to seek political asylum—meaning that Alfredo would have to relinquish his Cuban citizenship and jeopardize his ability to return home until he obtained a green card. After a year and a half of contemplating\, he mustered up the courage and made the difficult decision to leave his family behind for a country that could offer him the platform he needed to share the broader message of his music with more people. \nIt’s evident the journey was worth it because not only has Alfredo earned frequent appearances on prestigious stages around the world such as the Playboy Jazz Festival\, North Sea Jazz Festival\, Jazz in Marciac\, Umbria Jazz and \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJazz A Vienne\, but additionally\, Rodriguez was nominated for a Grammy® in the category of “Best Arrangement\, Instrumental or A Cappella\,” for the track “Guantanamera\,” from his album\, The Invasion Parade. Additionally\, during his first tour in China\, Rodriguez was asked to work with Tan Dun\, Siedah Garrett\, and Quincy Jones to compose the English version of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo theme song\, becoming the first non-Chinese artist to be bestowed this honor. He’s also been featured over the years by All Things Considered\, Downbeat\, The New York Times\, Los Angeles Times\, and Wall Street Journal among many others\, and performed for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert. \nRodriguez continues to share his music along with his impactful message of perseverance and cross culturalization on an international tour\, while sharing a variety of viral social media videos in which he plays well-known compositions in a Cuban timba style. \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Alfredo Rodriguez – Piano\nHan Beyli – Bass\nArmando Lopez – Drums\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n HIS MUSIC\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Alfredo Rodriguez Trio | Live on KUVO!\n \n \n \n \n \n Alfredo Rodríguez Trio: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Learn More about Alfredo Rodríguez

SUMMARY:Lucía
DESCRIPTION:About Lucía\n\n\n\n\nThree years ago\, 23-year-old singer Lucía was a finalist at the prestigious Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition – and the first Mexican artist to enter the contest. When it came time to select the song that she would perform in the final round\, she picked a standard that reflected her musical sensibility\, colored in equal parts by the beauty of jazz and the Latin American songbook. \n“We played ‘What a Difference a Day Makes\,’ which was popularized by Dinah Washington\, but in its initial incarnation was a bolero written in Spanish by María Grever\,” she says from her home in New York City. “We started it as a jazz ballad in English\, then switched to Spanish and added some zapateado dancing. My mother arrived with a contingent of fellow Mexicans to cheer me on. She told me that being able to sing in Spanish while dancing was what made me different from everyone else.” \nLucía won the competition\, and the fact that she did it with such a soulful\, multicultural rendition of a jazz standard also marked her arrival on the music scene. “What a Difference a Day Makes” is now the opening cut of the self-titled Lucía\, an exquisite debut album that showcases the luminous qualities of her voice\, and her superb technique and versatility. \nFrom her velvety reading of McCoy Tyner and Sammy Cahn’s “You Taught My Heart To Sing” and an achingly vulnerable cover of Olivia Rodrigo’s “Lacy” to a mournful “Alfonsina y el Mar” and a version of “Veracruz” that brims with Lucía’s Mexican pride\, the album finds the emerging singer surrounded by a cadre of jazz virtuosos: Venezuelan pianist Edward Simon\, American double-bassist Larry Grenadier\, Mexican drummer Antonio Sánchez\, and Puerto Rican saxophonist David Sánchez. The session was helmed by visionary producer Matt Pierson\, known for his work with legends such as Brad Mehldau\, Milton Nascimento and Samara Joy. \n\n\n\n\nHer innate talent was nurtured from a very young age. Born in Veracruz\, Lucía Gutiérrez Rebolloso began performing at age two\, together with her parents Laura Rebolloso and Ramón Gutiérrez and their acclaimed Son de Madera\, a son jarocho ensemble. She grew up surrounded by fandangos and the son jarocho community\, and is also the niece of Quetzal Flores\, founder of the Los Angeles-based Chicano rock band Quetzal. Most importantly\, Lucía’s parents played many records at home – from the salsa nuggets of El Gran Combo to the Latin folk of Mercedes Sosa and the healing Soul sides of Aretha Franklin. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Lucía – vocals \nGabriel Chakarji  – piano\nGuillermo Lopez – bass\nJullian Miltenberg – drums\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n HER MUSIC\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Full Performance at Joe’s Pub on January 9th\, 2025\nJoe’s Pub is a program of The Public Theater and named for its founder Joseph Papp\, opened in 1998 and plays a vital role in The Public’s mission of supporting young artists while providing established artists with an intimate space to perform and develop new work. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Learn More about Lucía

SUMMARY:Matt Wilson's Honey & Salt
DESCRIPTION:About Matt Wilson\nFew musicians embody the spontaneous energy of jazz like Matt Wilson. The New York-based drummer combines buoyant zeal\, idiosyncratic style\, infectious humor\, joyous swing and an indomitable spirit of surprise. Together\, with his universally recognized personal warmth\, these qualities have made Wilson one of the most in-demand players and educators on the modern jazz scene\, both beloved and respected by his peers\, elders and students. Not bad for a mischievous Midwestern boy from Knoxville\, Illinois. \nWhether anchoring an all-star group at the White House\, juggling tricky rhythmic swerves with his own quartets\, celebrating the holidays with his Christmas Tree-O\, exploring the poetry of Carl Sandburg\, sensitively supporting vocalists such as Dena DeRose\, presenting concerts at a neighborhood church or donning a superhero cape to inspire young musicians to embrace their individuality\, Wilson approaches music as a man on a mission: fostering a lively and passionate connection between music and people\, whether they be playing or listening to it. \nWilson has released thirteen albums as a leader. His latest recording\, Honey And Salt (Music Inspired By The Poetry Of Carl Sandburg)\, was recognized on over thirty worldwide “Best of 2017” lists\, including Top Ten in the National Public Radio Critics Poll\, JazzTimes\, Irish Times\, Boston Globe\, Jazziz and All About Jazz. The album received a coveted 5-star review (masterpiece) in DownBeat. On his previous album\, Beginning of a Memory (Palmetto)\, Wilson brought the musical and the personal together like never before\, uniting the members of all his ensembles into one aptly-named Big Happy Family to celebrate the life of his wife Felicia\, who lost her battle with leukemia in June 2014. This profound\, yet playful\, release also received a 5-star review in DownBeat and was selected as one of the top releases of 2016 by numerous publications\, including DownBeat\, JazzTimes and slate.com. It also cracked the Top Ten of the NPR Critics Poll. Wilson has made thirteen recordings as a leader for Palmetto Records since 1996\, including acclaimed releases by the Matt Wilson Quartet\, Arts & Crafts and the Christmas Tree-O. \nHe’s also co-led another dozen albums\, including duo outings with Lee Konitz and Steve Beresford\, Sifter (a trio with Mary Halvorson and Kirk Knuffke)\, MOB Trio and the acclaimed Trio M with his alliterative partner\, Myra Melford\, and Mark Dresser. And that’s only a drop in the proverbial bucket (and Matt has almost surely played a bucket or two\, proverbial and otherwise\, over the course of his career) in the context of an impressive discography that finds his distinctive style on more than 400 albums. That dizzying list includes releases by such greats as Dewey Redman\, Paul Bley\, Charlie Haden\, Lee Konitz\, Bob Stewart\, Cecil McBee\, Denny Zeitlin\, Ron Miles\, Jeff Lederer\, Marty Ehrlich\, Ted Nash\, Ray Anderson\, Don Friedman\, Jane Ira Bloom and Dena DeRose\, among many others. \nWilson has enjoyed performing for countless audiences across the country and around the world. One of his biggest honors came when he was invited to perform at a White House State Dinner hosted by President Obama in 2011\, where he played alongside a Who’s Who of jazz\, including Herbie Hancock\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Dianne Reeves\, Chris Botti\, Randy Brecker\, Antonio Hart and James Genus. Add those names to an ever-growing list of legends with whom Wilson has performed\, including Andrew Hill\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Geri Allen\, Elvis Costello\, Candido Camero\, Freddie Redd\, Butch Warren\, Cedar Walton\, Kenny Barron\, Christian McBride\, John Zorn\, Benny Golson\, Buster Williams\, Marshall Allen\, Nels Cline\, Rufus Reid\, Jason Moran\, Bill Henderson\, Frank Wess\, Anat Cohen\, Steve Nelson\, George Cables\, Mulgrew Miller\, Chris Potter\, Regina Carter\, Benny Green\, John Clayton\, Bobby Watson\, Eddie Gomez\, Wynton Marsalis\, Paquito D’Rivera\, George Mraz\, Michael Brecker\, Pat Metheny\, Joe Lovano\, John Scofield\, Bill Frisell\, Hubert Laws and Hank Jones. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nMatt Wilson – Drums\nKirk Knuffke – Cornet\nJeff Lederer – Reeds\nMartin Wind – Bass \nDawn Clement – Piano & Vocals\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n HIS MUSIC\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 13 Paper 1 and 2 Honey and Salt music by Matt Wilson Poem by Carl Sandburg\n\n \n \n \n \n \n 08 CHOOSE Honey and Salt music by Matt Wilson Poem by Carl Sandburg\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Learn More about Matt Wilson Honey & Salt

SUMMARY:Angelina & JP at the Inn of Lake George
DESCRIPTION:Angelina & JP\n\n\nAngelina & JP are a musical duo from opposite ends of New York’s Capital Region\, brought together by a shared love of all things music. Angelina Valente studied Musical Theatre\, while JP Hubbs focused on Piano – but their paths crossed in 2017 when they both joined an eight-piece bluegrass band. What started as a big group collaboration quickly revealed a deeper musical connection and a desire to explore more as a duo. \nTogether\, they dive into jazz standards\, discover fresh takes on the genre\, and write originals. But what really sets them apart is their knack for reimagining unexpected tunes—songs you’d never think of as jazz—infusing them with swing\, soul\, and style that’s entirely their own. \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The Inn of Lake George\n12 McGillis Ave.Lake George\, NY 12845518.668.4442 \nThe Lobby Bar is a classic\, intimate cocktail lounge offering a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy handcrafted cocktails. SUMMARY:Scott Hopkins Trio with Special Guest Keith Pray at the Barnsider
DESCRIPTION:Scott Hopkins Trio with special guest Keith Pray\nFeaturing Lou Smaldone (bass)\, Brian Melick (percussion)\, & Keith Pray (keyboard & sax) \nThe Scott Hopkins Trio brings together seasoned musicians – Lou Smaldone on upright bass\, Brian Melick on percussion\, and special guest Keith Pray on keyboards (and sax) to explore the rich and varied landscape of jazz and its many intersections. Keith has released ten albums under his name\, most recently “Floating in Space and Time” on his label PrayNation Records. Keith is an in demand jazz educator\, having conducted many all-counties\, masterclasses\, clinics\, co-founding All Ears Jazz\, which develops jazz education workshops. \nKeith also holds a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) from the European Graduate School in Expressive Arts: Therapy\, Conflict Transformation and Education. \n“Make no mistake about it Keith Pray is a voice with which to be reckoned with. He has it all and leaves it all here\, a brilliant convergence of chops\, insight\, honesty of sound and superb writing skills. SUMMARY:Jazz at the Lake 2022
DESCRIPTION:_______________________________________________________\nFriday\, September 16\, 2022\n_______________________________________________________\nPhoto by Aaron Davis \nSeptember 16 @ 6pm\nChembo Corniel Quintet\nHery Paz – tenor sax / flute\nCarlos Cuevas – piano\nAlex “Apolo” Ayala – bass\nJoel E. Mateo – drums\nChembo Corniel – congas / percussion\nPercussionist & GRAMMY nominee Wilson “Chembo” Corniel was raised in the humble streets of Red Hook\, Brooklyn. It was during these years as a quick-witted youngster that he had the privilege and honor to study with luminaries of the Afro-Caribbean percussion tradition\, such as Tommy Lopez Sr.\, “Little Ray” Romero\, Louie Bauzo and Cachete Maldonado. Chembo honed his skills at The Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts in New York and at the prestigious La Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana\, Cuba under the direction of the great Chucho Valdés.\nHis intense studies with such legends channeled his energy onto a path where he has now created a reputation for himself among musicians and the public. Today\, he is considered as one of the best hard-hitting\, versatile percussionists around. Chembo has toured with many major artists throughout Europe\, Asia\, North & South America\, and the Caribbean. He received a GRAMMY nomination for “Best Latin Jazz Album” for his CD release Things I Wanted To Do.\nAs a part of this evening’s program\, a long-time collaborator and friend\, poet and spoken word artist David Gonzalez will join the group on stage.\n \n  \n  \n@Evening\nRegional jazz favorites playing around town – check back soon for locations!\n_______________________________________________________\nSaturday\, September 17th\, 2022\n_______________________________________________________\n\nSeptember 17 @ 1pm\nGilad Hekselman & Far Star Trio\nGilad Hekselman is one of the leading voices in jazz guitar. Only a few years after his arrival to NY in 2004\, this native Israeli was already sharing stages with some of the greatest artists in the New York City jazz scene including Chris Potter\, Eric Harland\, Fred Hersch\, Mark Turner\, Anat Cohen\, Ari Hoenig\, Esperanza Spalding\, Jeff Ballard\, Ben Wendel\, Gretchen Parlato\, Ben Williams\, Avishai Cohen\, Tigran Hamasyan\, Aaron Parks and Becca Stevens among many others.\nIn May 2019\, Hekselman featured his quartet at the legendary NYC venue The Village Vanguard. He has also been playing all other major jazz clubs in New York City\, including the Blue Note\, The Jazz Standard\, Dizzy’s Club and Smalls. He is constantly touring world-wide and has played most noteworthy jazz festivals and venues including Montreux\, North Sea\, Montreal & SFJazz to name a few.\n \n  \n  \n  \n \nSeptember 17 @ 3pm\nSamara Joy\nWith a voice as smooth as velvet\, Samara Joy’s star seems to rise with each performance. Following her winning the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition\, she has just release her debut recording\, featuring guitarist Pasquale Grasso\, bassist Ari Roland\, and drummer Kenny Washington.\nAlthough having only recently celebrated her 21st birthday\, Samara has already performed in many of the great jazz venues in NYC\, including Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola\, The Blue Note\, and Mezzrow\, in addition to working with jazz greats such as Christian McBride\, Pasquale Grasso\, Kirk Lightsey\, Cyrus Chestnut\, and NEA Jazz Master Dr. Barry Harris.\nGrowing up in New York\, music was a pervasive presence\, due to the inspiration of her paternal grandparents\, Elder Goldwire and Ruth McLendon\, who led the well-known Philadelphia-based gospel group\, The Savettes. Her father toured with the renowned Gospel artist Andrae Crouch\, and her home was filled with the sounds of not only her father’s songs and songwriting process\, but the inspiration of many Gospel and R&B artists\, including Stevie Wonder\, Lalah Hathaway\, George Duke\, Musiq Soulchild\, Kim Burrell\, Commissioned\, and many others.\nSamara’s first exposure to jazz was while attending Fordham High School for the Arts\, where she performed regularly with the jazz band\, eventually winning Best Vocalist at JALC’s Essentially Ellington competition.\nWinning the Vaughan award was transformational for Joy. “I was suddenly on the jazz radar. It’s still bizarre to think of how fast things have progressed.” Since then\, Joy has dug deep to discover her jazz roots\, without losing sight of the innate simplicity that makes her sound shine. Her first album announces the arrival of a young artist destined for greatness.\n \n  \n  \n  \n\nSeptember 17 @ 5pm\nIke Sturm + HEART \nIke Sturm – bass & compositions\nMelissa Stylianou – voice\nGodwin Louis – saxophone\nChris Dingman – vibraphone\nJesse Lewis – guitar\nJohnathan Blake – drums\nBassist and composer Ike Sturm was raised in a musical home in Wisconsin\, learning from his father\, renowned composer and arranger\, Fred Sturm. Ike has performed with Gene Bertoncini\, Theo Bleckmann\, Ingrid Jensen\, Donny McCaslin\, Bobby McFerrin\, Ben Monder\, Maria Schneider and Kenny Wheeler. He has played on four Downbeat award-winning recordings\, as well as several Steve Reich releases on Cantaloupe and Nonesuch Records. He has performed with Alarm Will Sound and the International Contemporary Ensemble\, along with numerous creative ensembles in New York.\nIke studied jazz and classical bass and composition while earning undergraduate and graduate degrees at the Eastman School of Music. In addition\, he drew inspiration from studies with legendary bassist Dave Holland.\nSaint Peter’s Church in Manhattan\, where Sturm served as Music Director for the Jazz Ministry from 2004-2021\, commissioned him to compose Jazz Mass\, a work for voices\, strings and soloists that merges diverse musical languages into a powerfully unified aesthetic. The piece was released to critical international acclaim\, named one of Downbeat’s “Best Albums of the Year” and has been performed across the U.S.\, Scandinavia and Europe.\nEndless Field\, Ike’s ambient acoustic duo with guitarist Jesse Lewis has been featured live on WBGO New York’s “The Checkout” and on NPR. Their eponymous 2017 album was released on Biophilia Records and includes GRAMMY-winning soloist Donny McCaslin. The project aims to engage others in environmental awareness and activism through music and volunteer activities. In 2019 Ike and Jesse trekked to Utah to record a live wilderness album using a solar-powered battery\, collaborating with National Geographic videographers and L.A. sound engineers. Alive in the Wilderness was released to critical acclaim in 2020. Endless Field has been featured live on NYC’s “The Checkout” on WBGO and National Public Radio (NPR). Ike is currently touring and finishing several new albums\, including a large-scale project for choir\, string orchestra and chamber jazz ensemble.\n \n  \n  \n  \n\nSeptember 17 @ 7pm\nCamille Thurman & the Darrell Green Quartet\nAs a composer\, multi-instrumentalist\, vocalist\, and unique interpreter of the jazz tradition\, Camille Thurman is quickly becoming one of the standard bearers for the form\, making a considerable and dynamic contribution to the legacy of jazz while paying tribute to its heroes.\nFluid and powerful on the tenor saxophone and highly inventive as a vocalist\, she also plays bass clarinet\, flute\, and piccolo. Her rich sax sound has been compared to Joe Henderson and Dexter Gordon\, while her vocal approach—including an impressive scatting ability—has been classified alongside those of Ella Fitzgerald and Betty Carter. \nIn a few short years\, Thurman has shared stages with such jazz and R&B luminaries as George Coleman\, Roy Haynes\, Dianne Reeves\, Wynton Marsalis\, The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JALCO) featuring Wynton Marsalis\, Kenny Barron\, Buster Williams\, Charles Tolliver\, Jack DeJohnette\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Terri Lyne Carrington\, Jon Hendricks\, Harry Connick Jr.\, Jon Batiste\, Audra MacDonald\, Diana Krall\, Patti LaBelle\, Gladys Knight\, Chaka Khan\, Louis Hayes\, Russell Malone\, Nicholas Payton\, Jacky Terrasson\, Janelle Monáe\, Alicia Keys\, Lalah Hathaway\, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu\, among others. \nThe New York City native has already amassed several distinctive honors for her musicianship: runner up in the 2013 Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition\, two-time winner of the ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award and a winner of the Fulbright Scholars Cultural Ambassador Grant\, The Chamber Music of America Performance Plus Grant (Sponsored by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation) and the Jazz Coalition Composers Grant among others. Thurman also has four full-length recordings as a leader to her credit. \nHer compositions were featured and performed by her quartet in the ASCAP/The Kennedy Center “Songwriters: The Next Generation” showcase as well as the Greenwich School of Music “Uncharted” Series. Camille has appeared on BET’s “Black Girls Rock” as the saxophonist and flutist in the All-Star Band. Equally adept as a player and a singer\, and recognized for her compositional abilities as well\, Thurman has also earned accolades from the media\, from Jazz Times to Downbeat\, All About Jazz to the New York Times\, NPR to Sirius XM Satellite Radio\, BET to Jazz Night In America. \nThurman toured internationally toured two seasons with the world-renowned Jazz At Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis as a saxophonist\, becoming the first woman in 30 years to tour and perform full time (2018-2020). \n \n  \n  \n_______________________________________________________\nSunday\, September 18th\, 2022\n_______________________________________________________\n\nSeptember 18 @ 1pm\nZach Brock Quartet featuring Aaron Goldberg\, Yasushi Nakamura\, & Clarence  Penn\nZach Brock – violin\nAaron Goldberg – piano\nYasushi Nakamura – bass\nClarence Penn – drums\nCritically acclaimed as the “pre-eminent improvising violinist of his generation\,” Zach Brock is an American jazz violinist and multi GRAMMY Award-winning member of Snarky Puppy. He has toured with Stanley Clarke and Phil Markowitz\, released seven solo albums\, and was named “Rising Star Violinist” of 2013 by Downbeat Magazine. A passionate educator\, Zach has coached hundreds of musicians\, led masterclasses at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and Carnegie Hall in New York\, and as a five-year “Artist In Residence” at Temple University in Philadelphia.\nBorn to a musical family in Lexington\, KY\, he began studying violin at the age of four and performing publicly by the age of six. Zach’s improvisational skills were honed in the rich Chicago jazz scene while studying classical violin at Northwestern University. He released his debut album\, Zach Brock & The Coffee Achievers\, in 2003. Two years and two records later he was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall by trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas. Zach joined the band of legendary bassist Stanley Clarke in 2007.\nZach is most widely recognized through his twelve years of touring and recording with the genre- bending super group Snarky Puppy\, playing on several albums including the 2017 Grammy Award-winning album Culcha Vulcha\, 2019’s Immigrance and the 2021 Grammy Award-winning Live At The Royal Albert Hall.\nZach remains a perennial coffee fanatic and skateboard enthusiast\, and currently lives with his wife and daughters in the NYC area.\n \n  \n  \n  \n\nSeptember 18 @ 3pm\nVanderlei Pereira & Blindfold Test\nVanderlei was born into a musical family in Macaé\, Brazil\, a coastal city a little over 100 miles north of Rio de Janeiro and began playing professionally as a teenager. He moved to Rio as a young man\, where he pursued a multifaceted career in jazz\, popular\, and classical music\, including a six-year performance internship with the renowned Orquesta Sinfónica Brasiliera (OSB).\nAs Vanderlei’s inherited retinitis pigmentosa progressed and his vision deteriorated\, he realized he could no longer continue working in the classical realm\, and proceeded to dedicate himself full-time to playing jazz and other non-classical forms of music. He came to be known as one of the top jazz drummers in Rio\,as well as being a highly regarded player of samba and MPB\, working steadily even after he lost his sight completely.\nHe moved to New York City in 1988\, and quickly became an in-demand drummer on the New York Brazilian music scene. His versatility has enabled him to shine in performances and recordings with numerous outstanding artists\, including Toots Thielemans\, Airto Moreira and Flora Purim\, Sivuca\, Johnny Alf\, Dom Salvador\, Tito Puente\, Leny Andrade\, Rosa Passos\, Paul Winter\, Arturo O’Farrill’s Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra\, Claudio Roditi\, Bebel Gilberto\, and many others.\nWhen asked about the challenges of being a blind musician\, Vanderlei says: “I try to keep a positive attitude. I had to deal with losing my vision while continuing to work full-time as a musician. It took over twenty years to truly accept my blindness and develop the ability to see the positive things in everyday life. I try as much as I can to share some of that optimism with everyone I interact with daily. I would hate to think that people feel sorry for me because of my visual impairment. I’m blind\, but so what? I’ve still got music and my own way of seeing things\, thank God. I try to channel that energy and I think it comes through in my playing.”\n \n  \n  \n  \n\nSeptember 18 @ 5pm\nElio Villafranca & The Jass Syncopators\nBorn in the Pinar del Río province of Cuba\, pianist and composer Elio Villafranca was classically trained in percussion and composition at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana\, Cuba. He is a GRAMMY-Nominated Steinway Artist\, and recipient of the 2014 Jazz At Lincoln Center Millennium Swing Award.\nSince his arrival in the U.S. in mid-1995\, Elio Villafranca is at the forefront of the latest generation of remarkable pianists\, composers and bandleaders. In 2015\, Mr. Villafranca was among the 5 pianists hand-picked by Chick Corea to perform at the first Chick Corea Jazz Festival at Jazz at Lincoln Center.\nOver the years Elio Villafranca has recorded and performed nationally and internationally as a leader\, featuring jazz master artists such as Pat Martino\, Terell Stafford\, Billy Hart\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Eric Alexander\, Lewis Nash\, David Murray and Wynton Marsalis among others. As a sideman Elio Villafranca has collaborated with leading jazz and Latin jazz artists including: Chick Corea\, Jon Faddis\, Billy Harper\, Sonny Fortune\, Giovanni Hidalgo\, Miguel Zenón\, and Johnny Pacheco among others.\nElio Villafranca’s album Caribbean Tinge (Motema)\, received a 2014 Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik Nomination by the German Records Critics Award\, as well has been selected by JazzTimes and DownBeat magazines for a feature on their very competitive section Editor’s Pick.\nHe has received a GRAMMY Nomination in the Best Latin Jazz Album of the Year category and received the first NFA/Heineken Green Ribbon Master Artist Music Grant to compose his Concerto for Mariachi\, for Afro-Cuban Percussion and Symphony Orchestra. In 2017\, Elio Villafranca received The Sunshine Award to recognize excellence in the performing arts\, education\, science and sports of the various Caribbean countries\, South America\, Central America\, and Africa.\n \n  \n
