SUMMARY:Mike Glier: The Forests of Antarctica
DESCRIPTION: Artist’s ReceptionSaturday\, May 11\, 20244:00 – 6:00 PM\nZoom ConversationWednesday\, May15\, 20247:00 PMRecorded Zoom Link\nSunday ArtsSunday\, May 26\, 20241:00 – 4:00 PMGallery Tour and Art Workshop for all ages\n \n  \n  \n  \n \n \n  \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nImages:  (Top) Crying Beasts\, 2017\, oil on linen\,48” x 78″(Above)There Is a Faint Odor of Petroleum and the Birds Are Singing\, v.2\, 2021\, oil and charcoal on Arches Watercolor paper\, 72.5 ” x 49.5″ \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Artist’s Statement \nThe Forests of Antarctica paintings began by accident while working in the South Island of New Zealand\, which is a windy place\, effected by weather coming north from the Antarctic. When painting out of doors in the wind\, the panel often became a sail and lifted from the easel with the breeze. On days like this\, I took up pencil and paper and attempted to draw the wind. Encouraged by the unexpected results of drawing something that is invisible\, but can be felt\, I began to include sound and smell and touch as sources. \nI’m not by nature a synesthete\, but this attempt to train myself to be so has created drawings and paintings that are more associative than descriptive of particular landscapes. The title\, The Forests of Antarctica\, places these imagined places in the very distant past when Antarctica was warm or the uncertain future when Antarctica may be warm once more. \nThe process for this new work begins out of doors\, with plein air drawing and color notation. Back in the studio\, the studies are combined into large\, black and white\, oil on paper compositions that emphasize positive and negative reversals. Each form in these pictures is self-contained\, but since it shares edges with other forms\, the integrity is dependent on its neighbors. Like an ecosystem the forms are at once discrete and dependent\, and like things glimpsed while hiking\, they flicker into consciousness and dissolve into space. Once the black and white study is complete\, the color studies are consulted and the painting begins. The paintings are large\, about 6’ x 10’\, which is enough to envelope the viewer in a somatic experience. \nI worked in four locations\, the Berkshires\, the coast of northern Maine\, the central mountains of New Mexico\, and the island of St. John\, which is a Biosphere Reserve. It was in St. John that I began to understand the relevance of the plein air process in the 21st C. When drawing and painting out of doors\, there isn’t a break between thinking and doing. In the best moments there is no lag between the movement of the sun and the wind and the response of the brush and the knife. Stimulus and response becomes a single thing and the experience is one of feeling very connected with the subject.  It’s a delightful state of being in which what is inside gets thoroughly mixed up with what is outside. These paintings are a record of those kinds of moments and a demonstration of the human potential for empathy. \nNo matter what the fate of our species may be\, the natural world of the future will be exuberant. I hope these landscape pictures advocate for responsive and respectful engagement between people and the environment.  I hope they advocate for intimacy with what’s outside.  If there’s any sort of environmental agenda here\, if there’s anything useful to what I’m doing culturally\, it’s about modeling a relationship with what’s outside that is reciprocal. This performance is not about domination nor is it about submission; it’s about engaging in a partnership responsibly and happily. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nThe Forests of Antarctica 589\, 2018\, oil on primed paper\, 43″ x 58″ \n\n \n \n \n \n \n BioBorn in Kentucky\, Mike Glier studied psychology and art at Williams College\, Williamstown\, Massachusetts before attending the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. An advisee of Robert Morris\, Glier received an MA from Hunter College in 1975. His master’s thesis\, “The 1979 Dime Store Figurine” appeared in Artforum Magazine the following year. \nLiving in New York City in the 1980’s\, Glier was an active member of Collaborative Projects\, participating in the Time Square Show and organizing Art Direct\, a mail order catalog of art works. He\, also\, participated in several Group Material exhibitions including “Mass”\, “Resistance”\, “The Constitution”\, “Politics”\, and “AIDS Timeline”. In relation to the feminist dialog at the time\, Glier made a series of drawings and paintings about the white male identity\, which were exhibited at Anina Nosei Gallery under the title\, “White Male Power: Senators\, Game Hosts\, National Monuments\, Popes\, etc.” During his years in New York\, he was engaged with the artists’ book distributor\, Printed Matter Inc.\, serving on the staff and then the Board of Directors. \nIn the late 80’s Glier moved to upstate New York to begin a family and at Williams College a teaching career\, which he considers a happy\, satisfying\, and dematerialized part of his creative output. Glier is currently the Alexander Falck\, Class of 1899 Professor of Art. To celebrate the birth of his daughter\, Glier created a 26 panel painting installation entitled the “Alphabet of Lili”\, which not only documents the hopes and fears of raising a child but\, also\, the changing roles of men. Now living in the country\, Glier was inspired by its visual beauty\, but also by the urgent reality of a deteriorating natural environment and as a result he begin making art about landscape. In 2007 Glier completed Along a Long Line\, a series of plein air paintings created along a line of longitude that stretches from the Canadian Arctic\, through New York City and ends on the equator in Ecuador.  He has recorded this effort in a book\, “Along a Long Line”\, published in 2009 by Hard Press Editions. The human relationship to the natural world continues to be the main focus of his work. Derived from drawings made in the forests of Berkshires\, the coast of Maine\, the central mountains of New Mexico and the Virgin Islands\, his current painting series\, “The Forests of Antarctica”\, envisions an exuberant future in a changed climate. \nSolo exhibitions of Glier’s works have been presented at a variety of venues including The Kitchen\, New York; Rhona Hoffman Gallery\, Chicago; Barbara Gladstone Gallery\, New York; Galerie Tanja Grunert\, Cologne; Barbara Krakow Gallery\, Boston; San Jose Museum of Art\, and the Museum of Modern Art.  He has completed several permanent installations\, including the memorial to Carl Friedrich Goerdeler for the City of Leipzig\, Germany (in collaboration with Jenny Holzer)\, and “Town Green” a wall drawing installation for the Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, City Hall Annex.  “Town Green” was selected by Americans for the Arts as one of the best public art works of the year. A ten-year survey of his work was mounted at Hallwalls\, Buffalo NY in 1988 and a 35-year survey was mounted in 2014 at the Opalka Gallery\, The Sage Colleges\, Albany. A book entitled “Meander\, Because You Can’t See Much While Marching”\, which includes essays by Thomas Crow\, Lucy Lippard\, and David Breslin accompanies this survey. The Drawing Center\, NY and The Tyler Gallery\, Temple University\, have also sponsored national touring shows of his painting. \nGlier is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant in drawing and a Guggenheim Fellowship in painting. He has had residencies at the Liguria Study Center\, Bogliasco Italy; Dorland Mountain\, Temecula\, CA: Blue Mountain Center\, Blue Mountain\, NY: Herekeke\, Lama\, NM;\, Hauser and Wirth Gallery\, Somerset\, UK; Burchfield Penney Art Center\, Buffalo\, NY. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Courthouse Gallery 1 Lower Amherst Street Lake George\, NY 12845 518-668-2616 \nHours: Wednesday – Friday: 12:00 – 5:00 Saturday: 12:00 – 4:00 Sunday\, March 24\, 2024: 1:00 – 4:00 \nFor exhibition information or to schedule a visit outside of gallery hours please contactJune Waters\, Director of Exhibitionsjune@lakegeorgearts.org518-668-2616 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n THANK YOU! I am fascinated by the world encapsulated in the small piece of earth surrounding my home—its textures\, shapes\, and gestures—and the sensations and memories it evokes. As I dig the soil\, lift stones\, and plant seeds\, I am a participant and an observer\, keenly aware of the shifting ecology around me. I combine abstract\, symbolic\, and figurative references to living things and geological formations with ancient archetypes like spirals\, snakes\, and stars to create layers of association and explore our complex relationship with the natural world. For instance\, a series of sewn kite-shaped paintings alludes to the sensation of being grounded on the earth while looking upward\, connected to the sky. Paintings are not stretched or primed\, so their surfaces undulate\, while the sculptures’ textures are rough and jagged\, reminiscent of a mountain range\, or smooth like a boulder. Paint often drips and flows like streams in the landscape. Color is heightened or used symbolically\, and shapes are exaggerated to portray the garden as a place of memory\, sensation\, and thought. My intention is to animate the work and coax it into expressing the story it contains. With each piece\, I strive to elicit visceral emotions that connect us to the earth and sky and inspire curiosity\, empathy\, and care. The garden is a metaphor for life’s beauty\, intensity\, and fragility.\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBIOGRAPHY\nInspired by the materiality of the natural landscape\, Cadence Giersbach (b. 1966\, New York\, NY) creates abstract paintings and sculptures. SUMMARY:Walter Parks and the Unlawful Assembly
DESCRIPTION:About Walter Parks & the Unlawful Assembly\nAs a full 6 piece band or a trio\, The Unlawful Assembly reimagines and tributes historic spirituals and hymns which universally inspire\, empower and unite. Leader/guitarist/singer Walter Parks\, longtime sideman to Woodstock legend Richie Havens\, is joined by featured artists drummer/producer Steven Williams\, Ada Dyer on vocals who’s currently touring worldwide with Bruce Springsteen and/or Andrae Murchison on trombone. \nIn one live-concert experience The Unlawful Assembly entertains and informs while successfully melding roots music of divergent origins. The soundtrack to American black history – old-school spirituals\, gospel\, blues\, and prison work chants intertwine with swamp hollers\, shaped-note hymns and Appalachian reels of white homesteader origin. \nParks’ native northeast Florida swampy feel borrows from southern rock\, jazz\, early 70’s soul and few gospel interpretations that rest joyfully upon a foundation of modern electronic loops. \nReimagined covers and traditionals include: “Wade In The Water”\, “Follow The Drinking Gourd”\, “Down By The Riverside”\, “Steal Away”\, “Old Blind Barnabas”\, “Amazing Grace”\, “Higher Ground” and “Early In The Mornin’”. Walter contributes “Georgia Rice” and a co-write with Stan Lynch of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers on “Shoulder It”. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n THEIR MUSIC\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Down By the Riverside at Jersey City Jazz Festival\n \n \n \n \n \n The Unlawful Assembly • Bridge Over Troubled Water • Ada Dyer Vocalist\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Learn More about Walter Parks & the Unlawful Assembly

SUMMARY:Ria Curley\, Chuck Lamb & The Curley Lamb Nu-Soul-Jaz Quartet @ The Caldwell-Lake George Library
DESCRIPTION:Ria Curley\, Chuck Lamb & The Curley Lamb Nu-Soul-Jaz Quartet\nSinger/songwriter Ria Curley (melodic\, vocal R&B/Pop/Rock) and pianist/composer Chuck Lamb (instrumental Jazz/Fusion) are music and life partners (husband and wife)\, who compose and perform music\, both individually and together — the latter\, with usual bandmates Brad Monkell (bass) and Sam Zucchini (drums)\, as “The Curley Lamb Nu-Soul-Jaz Quartet.” \nRia Curley is an accomplished singer/songwriter/composer (music and lyrics)\, known for her silky voice\, groove-oriented R&B originals and “nu-jazz” standards. Ria is honored to have 22 of her original songs signed to publishing giant\, Warner/Chappell Music Int’l. \nChuck Lamb has been the pianist for the Brubeck Brothers Quartet for more than two decades and has composed for and played with the Quartet all over the world\, including Lincoln Center; the Newport\, Detroit\, Monterrey\, Bern and Saratoga Jazz Festivals; the Blue Note in Tokyo; Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow; Singapore with the Chinese National Orchestra; and more. When Chuck is not on tour with the Brubeck Brothers Quartet\, he performs regularly with his own ensembles\, including monthly as Jazz Artist-in-Residence for the highly acclaimed “Jazz at Caffe Lena” music series\, which Chuck cofounded in 2017 with producer extraordinaire\, Joel Moss\, in Saratoga Springs\, NY. \nTogether\, Ria and Chuck recently entered the world of television and film music and obtained a prime placement for one of their original songs in the opening monologue of the HBO MAX standup comedy special\, “Everything Must Go\,” starring Emmy-nominated Hannah Einbinder (of the Emmy-winning HBO MAX series\, “Hacks”). The couple also obtained three original song placements in the acclaimed documentary film\, “Exergue on documenta 14\,” which premiered at the esteemed Berlinale International Film Festival and received enthusiastic reviews. Ria’s single\, “Wanna Be There\,” received a nomination for “Record of the Year” at the 2024 Capital District Eddies Music Awards (“Eddies”). And Chuck took home the 2024 Eddies Music award for “Jazz Artist of the Year.” \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The Caldwell Lake George Library\n336 Canada StLake George\, NY 12845518.668.2528 \nA treasure in Lake George\, The Caldwell Lake George Library’s collection dates back to the 1880s when it was bequeathed after the death of local resident DeWitt Clinton Hay. SUMMARY:Nook & Cranny @ The Barnsider
DESCRIPTION:About Nook & Cranny\nNook & Cranny is made up of two musicians from Upstate New York\, Angelina Valente and JP Hubbs. Valente studied Musical Theatre in college and Hubbs studied Piano. They were introduced in 2017 when they began making music together when in an eight piece bluegrass band. They had a connection and love of all kinds of music that sparked the duo’s desire to see what they could become on their own. SUMMARY:The Arch Stanton Trio @ Gaslight
DESCRIPTION:The Arch Stanton Trio\nThe Arch Stanton Trio is a guitar-led version of the band’s acclaimed quartet. Based in upstate New York\, the band performs original jazz that is experimental\, yet rooted in bop and post-bop traditions. \nTheir debut album of original compositions\, Along For The Ride\, was released in November 2012 on WEPA Records. “With one foot in the timeless traditions of bop\, and the other about to set down on something new\,” the group “is as mysterious as its name\, with killer players that aren’t afraid to go out on a limb\, right to the very end\,” wrote Dave Malachowski in his review for The Daily Freeman. \nIn March 2013 the band embarked on a tour of Egypt\, performing at the Cairo Jazz Festival and other gigs. The trip was sponsored by the educational organization AMIDEAST\, the U.S. Embassy Cairo\, and the Center for American Studies at the American University in Cairo. That same year\, the band opened for Charlie Hunter and Oleta Adams at the Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival. \nDrawing from their experiences in Egypt\, the group\, in October 2014\, released a nine-song sophomore album\, Blues For Soli (also on WEPA Records)\, which includes a suite of music directly influenced by their Egypt tour. In a review of the album for Metroland\, Jeff Nania writes: “This record serves to showcase the evolution of a local group’s compositional style as they continue to go beyond bop and incorporate further cultural influences into their sound.” \nIn 2016\, the band performed at the Bridge Jazz Festival at the Massry Center in Albany\, opening for Ellis and Delfeayo Marsalis of the famed Marsalis family\, the “first family” of New Orleans Jazz. \nThe band has been a regular fixture of the Capital Region jazz club scene. It is currently planning material for its third album\, which will include a suite of compositions inspired by Ralph Ellison’s novel Invisible Man and other original pieces. \n \n Listen\, Watch\, & Learn More About The Arch Stanton Trio\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Gaslight. Wood Fired Bistro\n91 Canada StreetLake George\, NY 12801518.685.3487 \n“Really enjoyed this place\, for many reasons. First\, the menu is great\, there’s a wide array of dishes available. I opted for the wood fired pizza and it was really delicious\, I was very pleased with our choices. Second\, the staff here is wonderful. I dined at the bar and had a chance to talk to several of the staff; they were all friendly and knowledgable- I really appreciated this. Third\, the owner came over and chatted with me and asked me how my meal was\, that’s uncommon and it’s a mark of a good establishment. Finally\, Gaslight has a great\, accessible\, location and a really warm and interesting atmosphere. Check it out when you’re in Lake George\, I believe you won’t be disappointed. Highly recommend.” – Hugo Stachel \n \n Check out their menu!\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n “With one foot in the timeless traditions of bop\, and the other about to set down on something new\, the Arch Stanton Quartet is as mysterious as its name\, with killer players that aren’t afraid to go out on a limb\, right to the very end.” – Dave Malachowski\, review of “Along For The Ride” for the Daily Freeman of Kingston\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n \n	\n 20 events found.	\n	\n \n	\n\n \n	\n\n \n	\n\n	\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n	\n	Events\n\n	\n	\n	\n\n	\n Views Navigation	\n\n	\n	\n	\n Event Views Navigation	\n	\n \n \n \n	\n\n \n \n Photo \n \n	\n\n \n \n	\n \n	\n \n \n	\n	\n \n \n	\n	\n \n \n	\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n \n \n List \n	\n\n \n	\n \n \n	\n\n \n \n Month \n	\n\n \n	\n \n \n	\n\n \n \n Day \n	\n\n \n	\n \n \n	\n\n \n \n Photo \n	\n\n \n	\n \n \n	\n\n \n \n Week \n	\n\n \n	\n \n \n	\n\n \n \n Map \n	\n\n \n\n	\n\n\n\n\n	\n\n	\n	\n \n	\n \n	\n\n	\n\n\n \n	\n \n	\n\n	\n\n	\n\n\n	\n	Today\n\n	\n	\n \n \n 2024-09-01 \n \n September 1\, 2024 \n \n - SUMMARY:Dylan Perrillo & Ryan Sullivan @ The Inn of Lake George
DESCRIPTION:About Dylan & Ryan\nBassist\, Dylan Perrillo (from Hot Club of Saratoga and the Dylan Perrillo Quartet) will be joined by Ryan Sullivan for a one-of-a-kind jazz experience that will have fans of gypsy and swing jazz moving in their seats. \nAbout Dylan Perrillo: Dylan grew up in the sunshiny village of Voorheesville\, New York where he was fortunate enough to have participated in their wonderful music program beginning in primary school. Originally having played guitar at the age of seven\, he found that his skills were rendered useless when his older brother\, Tyler\, began playing guitar as well. Thus\, it became clear to the young lad that switching over to the electric bass was necessary. When Dylan entered his studies at Schenectady County Community College he began to learn to play the upright bass and began playing with musicians from around the capital district. Since then\, he has had the pleasure of performing with some really great people from all over the country. \nAbout Ryan Sullivan: Ryan Sullivan is a vibrant multi-instrumentalist from upstate New York who has honed his craft on the streets of New Orleans serenading many-a passersby and delighting audiences from all over the world. His unique approach and enthusiasm gives new life to the old beat of yesteryear’s sounds. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The Inn of Lake GeorgeThe Lobby Bar\n12 McGillis Avenue Lake George\, NY 12845518.668.4442 \nLobby Bar is a classic\, intimate cocktail lounge offering a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy handcrafted cocktails.
