SUMMARY:Jazz Around Town: Dylan Perrillo & Brad Brose @ The East Cove
DESCRIPTION:Bassist\, Dylan Perrillo (from Hot Club of Saratoga and the Dylan Perrillo Quartet) will be joined by NYC-based guitarist Brad Brose for a one-of-a-kind jazz experience that will have fans of gypsy and swing jazz moving in their seats.  \nAbout Dylan Perrillo: Dylan grew up in the sunshiny village of Voorheesville\, New York where was he fortunate enough to have participated in their wonderful music program beginning in primary school. Originally having played guitar at the age of seven\, he found that his skills were rendered useless when his older brother\, Tyler\, began playing guitar as well. Thus\, it became clear to the young lad that switching over to the electric bass was necessary. When Dylan entered his studies at Schenectady County Community College he began to learn to play the upright bass and began playing with musicians from around the capital district. Since then\, he has had the pleasure of performing with some really great people from all over the country.  \nAbout Brad Brose: Originally from Hollywood\, California\, Brad Brose has performed with some of the best swing musicians that the U.S. has to offer. After playing in swing dance clubs and for festivals across the USA\, Brad decided to move to France to study Europe’s greatest contribution to jazz: Jazz Manouche. Now based in Paris\, he plays his gypsy jazz guitar along with the most respected jazz manouche artists such as Tchavolo Schmitt\, Stochelo Rosenberg\, and others in the all of the legendary gypsy jazz clubs and festivals across Europe. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Check out their menu!\n \n \n \n \n \n 3873 NY-9LLake George518.685.5224 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The East Cove\nSteaks\, Seafood\, Chicken\, Pasta\, And More In A Cozy\, Newly Remodeled Setting!Come experience Hearty American eats in a laid-back cabin with a mezzanine lounge at East Cove. We are a Lake George staple that recently reopened under new ownership and management. I opted for the wood fired pizza and it was really delicious\, I was very pleased with our choices. Second\, the staff here is wonderful. I dined at the bar and had a chance to talk to several of the staff; they were all friendly and knowledgable- I really appreciated this. Third\, the owner came over and chatted with me and asked me how my meal was\, that’s uncommon and it’s a mark of a good establishment. Finally\, Gaslight has a great\, accessible\, location and a really warm and interesting atmosphere. Check it out when you’re in Lake George\, I believe you won’t be disappointed. SUMMARY:Naya Baaz: Rez Abbasi & Josh Feinberg
DESCRIPTION:Awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2021 for composition\, Voted #1 Rising-Star Guitarist in the 2013 DownBeat Critics Poll and subsequently placed in the top-ten guitarists alongside luminaries Bill Frisell and Pat Metheny\, guitarist and composer Rez Abbasi is one of the most original voices on the current scene. \nBorn in Karachi\, Pakistan\, removed at the age of four to the vastness of Southern California\, schooled at the University of Southern California and the Manhattan School of Music in jazz and classical music\, along with a pilgrimage in India under the guidance of master percussionist\, Ustad Alla Rakha\, Rez Abbasi is a vivid synthesis of all the above stated influences and genres. Making New York home for the past 25 years\, Abbasi is considered by many to be one of the foremost modern jazz guitar players the world over. He has honed his skills with performances throughout Europe\, Canada\, the U.S.\, Mexico and India and has performed and recorded with many jazz greats including\, Grammy winner Ruth Brown\, Peter Erskine\, Kenny Werner\, Barre Phillips\, Tim Berne\, Michael Formanek\, Billy Hart\, Gary Thomas\, Dave Douglas\, Rudresh Mahanthappa\, Mike Clark\, Tim Hagans\, John Beasly\, Ronu Majumdar\, Kadri Gopalnath\, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt\, Vijay Iyer\, Marilyn Crispell\, Greg Osby\, Howard Levy and a host of others. \nWith 14 albums of mostly original compositions under his belt\, Abbasi continues to find new groups of musicians to help his musical vision come to life. His 2005 recording Snake Charmer\, created a stir in the music world partly due to his organic\, original approach in blending two complex musical genres together\, namely jazz and Indian music. The provocative instrumentation of organ\, drums and guitar alongside Indian vocalist Kiran Ahluwalia\, is on one hand\, a sound grounded in jazz and yet uncommon in jazz arenas. 20th Century Guitar reviewed the CD as\, “One of the best examples yet of how to merge Indian Classical music with jazz…Snake Charmer really breaks new ground.” In 2007\, Rez achieved even greater heights with the follow up to Snake Charmer\, Bazaar. Bazaar continues the group’s journey through territories unheard in today’s jazz/world music scene.

SUMMARY:Richie Goods / Chien Chien “Connected”
DESCRIPTION:“CONNECTED” was formed in 2020. During the COVID-19 lockdown\, Richie Goods and Chien Chien had frequent conversations about the Black Lives Matter movement and the unwarranted hate crimes against Asians. They decided to do a project that would unify people and invoke imagery of love and peace. As often happens\, music was the catalyst that bridged the gap and resulted in a rare collaboration; a partnership that produced “The Path” Sep. 2020\, “We Three Kings” Nov. 2020\, and “Rain” Dec. 2021. They decided to cement their musical relationship by creating “CONNECTED”\, Together\, Richie and Chien Chien create an exciting\, new\, energetic listening experience and attract new audiences everywhere. Their new release\, “Richie Goods & Chien Chien – CONNECTED” was released January 13 2023 and has been on the jazz week charts for 12 weeks. \nCrazy as it seems\, somehow during the shutdown we felt more free and inspired to create. Through all the chaos and violence\, we wanted to do a project that would unify people and invoke imagery of love and peace. We realized one of our pieces\, Donnie Hathaway’s “Someday We’ll All Be Free” does just that. It speaks of freedom and balance. \nWe believe we all share one energy\, one connection. \nXOXO\, Richie & Chien \n“Rarely does an album come about that defines an era but Connected is one such album. As Billie Holiday gave us Strange Fruit and Gil Scott Heron gave us Small Talk at 125th & Lenox\, Richie Goods and Chien Chien’s Connected is a musical historical landmark for our time.” — Andromeda Turre (Sirius Xm real jazz host)

SUMMARY:Emilio Solla & the Tango Jazz Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Saxophones: Alejandro Aviles\, Todd Bashore\, John Ellis\, Jeremy Powell\, Terry Goss\nTrumpets: Vitaly Golonev\, Jim Seeley\, John Bailey\, Rachel Terrien\nTrombones: Noah Bless\, Eric Miller\, Mike Fahie\, James Rodgers\nRhythm: Emilio Solla (p)\, Pablo Aslan (b)\, Ferenc Nemeth (d) \nLatin Grammy winner and multi-Grammy nominee\, Argentine-born and New York-based pianist and composer Emilio Solla’s first band\, Apertura\, (1983-1989) was praised by Astor Piazzolla as one of the most interesting new sounds in the Buenos Aires scene in 1986. Today\, with eleven CDs as bandleader and more than forty as arranger/producer\, he is regarded by peers and critics as one of the most outstanding and unique composers in the Tango-Jazz field\, a musical language which blends Argentine tango and folk with jazz and other contemporary music styles. He has performed all around Europe\, Japan\, the US and Latin America to rave reviews in many of the most important jazz houses and festivals\, such as Bim Huis\, Lincoln Center\, Marciac\, Blue Note\, Fasching and more. \nSolla moved to New York in 2006\, and since then he has composed for\, recorded and toured with Paquito D’Rivera\, Arturo O’Farrill\, Edmar Castañeda\, Cristina Pato and many others jazz and classical music greats\, besides performing regularly with his different projects at the Jazz Standard\, Jazz at Lincoln Center and Birdland. Former members of his bands include jazz stars Donny Mc Caslin\, Omer Avital\, Jorge Rossy\, Jeff Ballard and more. \nHe continues to tour Europe and the US while working as a free-lance arranger and pianist in different projects in NY. His NY based quintet Bien Sur! released its first CD in 2010 with special guest Billy Hart. This album was included in the Best of 2010 list by Downbeat Magazine. Since November 2010\, he is leading a nine piece orchestra\, La Inestable de Brooklyn\, featuring some of the strongest jazz players in NYC. Their first CD\, Second Half (2015) was Nominated for a Grammy Award as Best Latin Jazz Album. In November 2014 Solla’s first symphonic work had its World Premiere at the Palau de la Musica\, during the Barcelona Jazz Festival and its US Premier at the Chicago Symphony Hall. 2017 took him back to Buenos Aires for the Premiere of the symphonic version of his Suite Piazzollana. In 2018\, he started composing for a new project\, the Tango Jazz Orchestra\, a 17-piece big band\, taking his blend of Latin American sounds and jazz to a whole new level of accomplishment. This orchestra released its first album\, “Puertos” on August 28\, 2019. This album won the Latin Grammy 2020 for Best Jazz Album and one of Solla’s compositions\, La Novena\, was awarded a Grammy Nomination in 2019 as Best Instrumental Arrangement. \nThe Tango Jazz Orchestra (TJO) is Emilio’s most ambitious project to date. A full 17-piece jazz orchestra which replaces the guitar by a bandoneon. This large ensemble has allowed Solla to take his blend of tango and Latin American music with jazz to a whole new level of accomplishment. The orchestra recorded and released its first work\, “Puertos\, Music of International Waters” in 2019. One of Solla’s compositions was nominated that same year for a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement (sharing the honor with Vince Mendoza\, John Williams and Jacob Collier) and the full album was awarded the 2020 Latin Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album.

SUMMARY:Hanna Washburn
DESCRIPTION:About the Work \n Hanna Washburn builds sculptures from recycled clothing and textiles\, furniture\, household items\, and other materials that have former utilities and associations. She sews by hand and works intuitively\, allowing the forms to grow organically into complex aggregates of color\, pattern\, and texture. The resulting sculptures gradually emerge as anthropomorphic and bodily: they droop\, gesture\, and hold space. Washburn’s work visualizes the patchwork of identity-forming and the complex joy of existing inside a body. \nJog your Memory is about the colors\, patterns\, forms\, and gestures that remind you of something. Sometimes those connections are strong and vibrant; sometimes they are fuzzy or choppy. Washburn uses the materials of everyday life to build up sculptures with distinct personalities. Washburn will occasionally incorporate the literal object or material from her past—or\, if she no longer has the thing\, will recreate the specific pattern or item in her own hand. \nJog Your Memory also marks the first time Washburn has displayed several of her hanging sculptures together\, a relatively new part of her practice. The hanging sculptures occupy the space of suspended items found in the home: hanging planters\, light fixtures\, and chandeliers. They are inspired in particular by her great grandmother’s front porch—a place Washburn remembers as sunlit and filled with many delightful hanging objects: flowers and bird cages and other intriguing things. Washburn’s hanging sculptures also serve the purpose of occupying the space between the floor\, the wall\, and the ceiling\, interrupting the exhibition and interrupting your thoughts. Washburn thinks of them as representing the way a memory can stop you in your tracks. \nAbout the Artist \nHanna Washburn is an artist and curator based in Beacon\, New York. Washburn’s work has been featured in publications including The New York Times\, Hyperallergic\, Cult Bytes\, and the Femme Art Review. Exhibition venues include SPRING/BREAK Art Fair (New York\, NY)\, the Dorsky Museum of Art (New Paltz\, NY)\, NADA Art Fair (New York\, NY)\, Wassaic Project (Wassaic\, NY)\, Munson (Utica\, NY)\, Sotheby’s Institute of Art (New York\, NY)\, and Rice University (Houston\, TX). Washburn has held artist residences at organizations including Haystack Mountain School (2023)\, Monson Arts (2020)\, Vermont Studio Center (2019)\, the Textile Arts Center (2018)\, and the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Colony (2018). \nWashburn received her MFA in Fine Art from the School of Visual Arts in 2018\, and her BA in Fine Art and English Literature from Kenyon College in 2014. She currently works in the Curatorial Department at Storm King Art Center. \nThe Courthouse Gallery is located at the side entrance of the Old County Courthouse\, corner of Canada and Lower Amherst Streets in Lake George\, NY. During scheduled exhibitions dates our in-person office and gallery hours are Wednesday through Friday 12 – 5 pm\, Saturday 12 – 4 pm.  If you need to reach us between active exhibition dates we are available through phone and/or email: \nThis exhibition is funded in part by the Town and Village of Lake George and LGAP members. It’s a way to process and relate to the world\, like conversing with a person or chewing food. My first response to an idea or event is to interpret it\, to make it something I can see. A phrase like “drunken centaur\,” doesn’t go far on its own\, but by turning it over this way and that\, finding forms for invisible notions\, and inviting in accident and precedent\, painting becomes a space of illumination. It’s a way to get past words. In the open space of the page\, metaphors popup like sudden jokes\, fully formed and emblematic. Imagination here isn’t about escape or fancy; it’s a matter of engaging the mind’s eye as the primary interpretive tool. \nI use oil paints\, often making my own. It’s mesmerizing stuff that takes on endless qualities. It mixes so easily with the eye\, ready to become something\, making suggestions as if it has its own desires. Looking closely into it shows something of the mystery of substance and representation altogether\, of how the material world conspires with perception\, mind\, and knowledge to make up our experience. I pay attention to the vitality of the paint layers and the movement of the surface. There are moments like “ah\, I’ve seen that in so and so”—passages of paint that share in a lineage. \nI paint with a range of historical approaches not to mimic a look\, but as a practice. There’s wisdom in method and material. There’s richness. Technical investigation sheds light on and expands the creative process beyond notions of a verisimilitude or style. Painting is an outlook. Rather than just dressing up the ancients in modern clothes\, I see these processes as incisive analytical tools\, like finding an old hand-ground lens that still magnifies whatever it’s placed in front of. \nBio \nJeff Wigman has shown regularly since moving his studio upstate in 2006. His work has been exhibited in venues such as The Albany Institute of History and Art\, Albany\, NY; Opalka Gallery\, Albany\, NY; The Hyde Collection\, Glens Falls\, NY; Manifest Gallery\, Cincinnati\,OH; Bowery Gallery\, Manhattan; Good Naked Gallery\, Brooklyn; and Kunstverein Eisenstadt\, Austria. Jeff earned a BFA in painting and sculpture from Parsons School of Design in 1992. He grew up in southern Ohio and lives and works in Troy\, New York. \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n				 \nThe Courthouse Gallery is located at the side entrance of the Old County Courthouse\,corner of Canada and Lower Amherst Streetsin Lake George\, NY.\nDuring scheduled exhibitions dates our in-person office and gallery hours areWednesday through Friday 12 – 5 pm& Saturdays 12 – 4 pm.\nIf you would like to visit exhibitions outside of Gallery hours or request a tour for a group\, please contact June Waters\, Director of Exhibitions (contact information below)\nIf you need to reach us between active exhibition dates we are available through email:\nJune Waters\, Director of Exhibitions\, june@lakegeorgearts.org\nTanya Tobias-Tomis\, Executive Director\, tanya@lakegeorgearts.org\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n THANK YOU!This exhibition is funded in part by the Town of Lake George\, the Village of Lake George\, The New York State Council on the Arts\, the Glenn & Carol Pearsall Foundation\, the Alfred Z. Nightmarish industrial creations are set against images of grand mechanical constructions\, an off-kilter vision of technology. In my visual vocabulary\, the contemporary world of nanotechnology and genetic modification is retrofitted with collaged analog machine parts. Collages of mechanical humanoids and animals turn into printmaking\, animation\, and sculpture\, as I create visual narratives telling the story of a doomed robotic populace in a techno-dystopia. My current body of work investigates technology’s role in utopian movements. One branch of research involves fantastical narratives of animals\, plants\, and fungi seeking to escape Earth for a more sustainable climate. The other involves representations of the mythical jewish golem\, the original automaton summoned by magic to protect against oppression. Both branches seek to answer the question as to whether our technologies have made for better worlds or worse. \n \n \n \n \n \n BIO \nNathan Meltz uses printmaking\, animation\, sculpture\, and performance to comment on the infiltration of technology into every facet of life\, from politics and food\, to family and war. \nHis solo exhibitions include the gallery at Atelier Presse Papier\, Trois-Rivières\, Canada\, the Shircliff Gallery at Vincennes University\, Indiana\, Southern Illinois University’s Vergette Gallery\, GRIDSPACE (NYC)\, the University of Florida – Jacksonville’s Andrew Brest Gallery\, and Noise Gallery (OH). His international exhibitions include the International Print Center in New York\, the 16th International Printmaking Triennial Graphica Creativa Triennial\, Jyväskylä Art Museum\, Finland\, the Museum of Modern Art in Rio De Janiero\, Brazil\, and more. His art has been featured in publications including Art in Print\, Printeresting\, and the Mid-America Print Council Journal. His series “Strangling the Fascist Viper” has received juror awards from the Louisiana International Printmaking Exhibition and the Political Impressions exhibition at the Rochester Institute of Technology\, the Printworks Award from Artists Image Resource\, Pittsburgh PA\, and the Prix de Print award from Art in Print Magazine. \nHis current body of research involving ecologies has been included in an article published in the California Society of Printmakers Journal and exhibited in many venues\, including the Four Rivers Printmaking Biennial\, where he was awarded an honorable mention award\,and the Trois-Rivières International Printmaking Biennial\, Canada\, where he was given the Prix de Presse Papier award. SUMMARY:John McGiff: Painting as Vision
DESCRIPTION: \nArtist’s Statement \nI am naturally inclined towards making groups of images\, exploring a central idea and evolving a language of gesture\, color and design that best expresses the interests that grow from this meditation\, often over the span of years. \nA recent series\, for example\, is based on the palette and design patterns of Indian Ragamala paintings and involve using Indian block printing and gouache. The theme is the house as a repository of personal and historical memory\, as well as a metaphor for the self. The compositions have moved from the exterior of these “Rag” houses to their inhabited interiors\, the figures almost hermetic in their solitary pursuits\, which hint at pursuits of self-knowledge. \nThe Icarus Unbound paintings that follow dramatize how these interior monologues might unfold\, rewriting this Greek myth to suit the process. This suite of 6 paintings also mirror a three year therapeutic process with a Jungian Analyst in which I became aware of my path on The Hero’s Journey. Icarus is given a second chance to learn to fly and he does it with the agency of the Divine Feminine\, with whom he ultimately finds union. \nAll of the paintings I make are in some fashion self-portraits and because the themes are common to us all\, they touch on broader archetypal experiences that go beyond my own personal reflections. \n  \nBio \nI have been a painter and a teacher for over forty years and have exhibited my work in many different venues across the Mid Atlantic. I have recently relocated to the Hudson River Valley from Delaware\, where I was Chair of the Arts Department at an Independent Boarding school for 20+ years. \nI am currently teaching art history for Vassar’s Life Long Learning Institute and developing a series of paintings reinterpreting Classic Greek mythological tales. My reimagining of the Icarus story is travelling to 3 separate galleries this year\, including the Lake George Arts Project. I live with my wife\, Elizabeth\, a ceramicist\, and dog\, Bear\, in Dutchess County.  My Daughter\, Olivia\, is an illustrator in NYC and son\, Aidan\, is a builder and sculptor who lives nearby. \n \n \n Click here for recorded Zoom Conversation with John McGiff\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Thank you to our exhibition sponsors!\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Images: Top: Icarus Awakes in the Garden\, Gouache\, 36″ x 48″             Above: The Serenade\, 2021\,Gouache\, 30” x 38”

When painting out of doors in the wind\, the panel often became a sail and lifted from the easel with the breeze. On days like this\, I took up pencil and paper and attempted to draw the wind. Encouraged by the unexpected results of drawing something that is invisible\, but can be felt\, I began to include sound and smell and touch as sources. \nI’m not by nature a synesthete\, but this attempt to train myself to be so has created drawings and paintings that are more associative than descriptive of particular landscapes. The title\, The Forests of Antarctica\, places these imagined places in the very distant past when Antarctica was warm or the uncertain future when Antarctica may be warm once more. \nThe process for this new work begins out of doors\, with plein air drawing and color notation. Back in the studio\, the studies are combined into large\, black and white\, oil on paper compositions that emphasize positive and negative reversals. Each form in these pictures is self-contained\, but since it shares edges with other forms\, the integrity is dependent on its neighbors. Like an ecosystem the forms are at once discrete and dependent\, and like things glimpsed while hiking\, they flicker into consciousness and dissolve into space. Once the black and white study is complete\, the color studies are consulted and the painting begins. The paintings are large\, about 6’ x 10’\, which is enough to envelope the viewer in a somatic experience. \nI worked in four locations\, the Berkshires\, the coast of northern Maine\, the central mountains of New Mexico\, and the island of St. John\, which is a Biosphere Reserve. It was in St. John that I began to understand the relevance of the plein air process in the 21st C. When drawing and painting out of doors\, there isn’t a break between thinking and doing. In the best moments there is no lag between the movement of the sun and the wind and the response of the brush and the knife. Stimulus and response becomes a single thing and the experience is one of feeling very connected with the subject.  It’s a delightful state of being in which what is inside gets thoroughly mixed up with what is outside. These paintings are a record of those kinds of moments and a demonstration of the human potential for empathy. \nNo matter what the fate of our species may be\, the natural world of the future will be exuberant. I hope these landscape pictures advocate for responsive and respectful engagement between people and the environment.  I hope they advocate for intimacy with what’s outside.  If there’s any sort of environmental agenda here\, if there’s anything useful to what I’m doing culturally\, it’s about modeling a relationship with what’s outside that is reciprocal. This performance is not about domination nor is it about submission; it’s about engaging in a partnership responsibly and happily. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nThe Forests of Antarctica 589\, 2018\, oil on primed paper\, 43″ x 58″ \n\n \n \n \n \n \n BioBorn in Kentucky\, Mike Glier studied psychology and art at Williams College\, Williamstown\, Massachusetts before attending the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. An advisee of Robert Morris\, Glier received an MA from Hunter College in 1975. His master’s thesis\, “The 1979 Dime Store Figurine” appeared in Artforum Magazine the following year. \nLiving in New York City in the 1980’s\, Glier was an active member of Collaborative Projects\, participating in the Time Square Show and organizing Art Direct\, a mail order catalog of art works. He\, also\, participated in several Group Material exhibitions including “Mass”\, “Resistance”\, “The Constitution”\, “Politics”\, and “AIDS Timeline”. In relation to the feminist dialog at the time\, Glier made a series of drawings and paintings about the white male identity\, which were exhibited at Anina Nosei Gallery under the title\, “White Male Power: Senators\, Game Hosts\, National Monuments\, Popes\, etc.” During his years in New York\, he was engaged with the artists’ book distributor\, Printed Matter Inc.\, serving on the staff and then the Board of Directors. \nIn the late 80’s Glier moved to upstate New York to begin a family and at Williams College a teaching career\, which he considers a happy\, satisfying\, and dematerialized part of his creative output. Glier is currently the Alexander Falck\, Class of 1899 Professor of Art. To celebrate the birth of his daughter\, Glier created a 26 panel painting installation entitled the “Alphabet of Lili”\, which not only documents the hopes and fears of raising a child but\, also\, the changing roles of men. Now living in the country\, Glier was inspired by its visual beauty\, but also by the urgent reality of a deteriorating natural environment and as a result he begin making art about landscape. In 2007 Glier completed Along a Long Line\, a series of plein air paintings created along a line of longitude that stretches from the Canadian Arctic\, through New York City and ends on the equator in Ecuador.  He has recorded this effort in a book\, “Along a Long Line”\, published in 2009 by Hard Press Editions. The human relationship to the natural world continues to be the main focus of his work. Derived from drawings made in the forests of Berkshires\, the coast of Maine\, the central mountains of New Mexico and the Virgin Islands\, his current painting series\, “The Forests of Antarctica”\, envisions an exuberant future in a changed climate. \nSolo exhibitions of Glier’s works have been presented at a variety of venues including The Kitchen\, New York; Rhona Hoffman Gallery\, Chicago; Barbara Gladstone Gallery\, New York; Galerie Tanja Grunert\, Cologne; Barbara Krakow Gallery\, Boston; San Jose Museum of Art\, and the Museum of Modern Art.  He has completed several permanent installations\, including the memorial to Carl Friedrich Goerdeler for the City of Leipzig\, Germany (in collaboration with Jenny Holzer)\, and “Town Green” a wall drawing installation for the Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, City Hall Annex.  “Town Green” was selected by Americans for the Arts as one of the best public art works of the year. A ten-year survey of his work was mounted at Hallwalls\, Buffalo NY in 1988 and a 35-year survey was mounted in 2014 at the Opalka Gallery\, The Sage Colleges\, Albany. A book entitled “Meander\, Because You Can’t See Much While Marching”\, which includes essays by Thomas Crow\, Lucy Lippard\, and David Breslin accompanies this survey. The Drawing Center\, NY and The Tyler Gallery\, Temple University\, have also sponsored national touring shows of his painting. \nGlier is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant in drawing and a Guggenheim Fellowship in painting. He has had residencies at the Liguria Study Center\, Bogliasco Italy; Dorland Mountain\, Temecula\, CA: Blue Mountain Center\, Blue Mountain\, NY: Herekeke\, Lama\, NM;\, Hauser and Wirth Gallery\, Somerset\, UK; Burchfield Penney Art Center\, Buffalo\, NY. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Courthouse Gallery 1 Lower Amherst Street Lake George\, NY 12845 518-668-2616 \nHours: Wednesday – Friday: 12:00 – 5:00 Saturday: 12:00 – 4:00 Sunday\, March 24\, 2024: 1:00 – 4:00 \nFor exhibition information or to schedule a visit outside of gallery hours please contactJune Waters\, Director of Exhibitionsjune@lakegeorgearts.org518-668-2616 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n THANK YOU! I am fascinated by the world encapsulated in the small piece of earth surrounding my home—its textures\, shapes\, and gestures—and the sensations and memories it evokes. As I dig the soil\, lift stones\, and plant seeds\, I am a participant and an observer\, keenly aware of the shifting ecology around me. I combine abstract\, symbolic\, and figurative references to living things and geological formations with ancient archetypes like spirals\, snakes\, and stars to create layers of association and explore our complex relationship with the natural world. For instance\, a series of sewn kite-shaped paintings alludes to the sensation of being grounded on the earth while looking upward\, connected to the sky. Paintings are not stretched or primed\, so their surfaces undulate\, while the sculptures’ textures are rough and jagged\, reminiscent of a mountain range\, or smooth like a boulder. Paint often drips and flows like streams in the landscape. Color is heightened or used symbolically\, and shapes are exaggerated to portray the garden as a place of memory\, sensation\, and thought. My intention is to animate the work and coax it into expressing the story it contains. With each piece\, I strive to elicit visceral emotions that connect us to the earth and sky and inspire curiosity\, empathy\, and care. The garden is a metaphor for life’s beauty\, intensity\, and fragility.\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBIOGRAPHY\nInspired by the materiality of the natural landscape\, Cadence Giersbach (b. 1966\, New York\, NY) creates abstract paintings and sculptures.
