SUMMARY:Daniel Kelly Group: Celebrating Paul Pines
DESCRIPTION:About Daniel Kelly / The Daniel Kelly Group\nPianist & composer Daniel Kelly first performed at Jazz at the Lake in 2004 with the Harvie S band. He returned over the years with his Emerge Trio\, the WORKS Trio with Joe Lovano\, and his multimedia collaboration with The Seeing with Photography Collective\, Blind Visionaries\, inaugurating the first Friday evening Jazz at the Lake performance. \nAn artist who explores the meeting place of music with literature\, visual art and journalism with his various projects\, Daniel has created several works that incorporate poetry\, including All the World’s a Song: Shakespeare in Jazz\, which interprets Shakespeare’s words as lyrics to jazz songs. \nIn honor of the 40th anniversary of the festival\, Daniel uses the poetry of Paul Pines as inspiration for the music for this year’s performance. Paul\, who founded the Lake George Jazz Weekend along with John Strong in 1984\, was a dear friend to Daniel. He previously collaborated with Paul in his final months in 2018\, composing settings for poems from his book Gathering Sparks in a 45-minute suite scored for a jazz septet titled Museum of the Infinite. This year\, Daniel will explore Paul’s poetry throughout his writing career\, anthologized in the collection A Furnace in the Shadows: Selected Poems. \nKelly’s music has been declared “powerfully moving” by Time Out New York. He has performed with Grammy-award winners Joe Lovano & Nicole Zuraitis\, hip-hop star Lauryn Hill\, cutting-edge modern classical The Bang on a Can All-Stars and a long list of jazz musicians such as NEA Jazz Masters Dave Liebman & Sheila Jordan\, Don Byron\, Donny McCaslin\, Bobby Sanabria and many others. \nRakonto\, Kelly’s series of interview-based concerts\, have been commissioned by 13 performing art centers across the US. Each of these concert-length works have transformed stories of everyday people – farmers\, teachers\, students\, seniors\, immigrants and hurricane survivors – into dramatic and compelling music that celebrates our shared human experience. \nDaniel has been honored to continue Paul’s role as Curator of Jazz at the Lake for the past five years. \n“I remain convinced that Daniel Kelly is one of the most stunningly original talents both as an improviser and a leader that I have known in a long career of promoting this art form. His musical ideas spring naturally from a visionary imagination.” — Paul Pines\, Curator\, Lake George Jazz Weekend \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Daniel Kelly – pianoJesse Lewis – guitarIke Sturm – bassJared Schonig – drumsDavid Gonzalez – spoken word\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n HIS MUSIC\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n All the World’s a Stage; Shakespeare in Jazz\n \n \n \n \n \n Entrance to the Underworld – poetry by Paul Pines\, music composed by Daniel Kelly\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Learn More about Daniel Kelly\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 4 DAYS • 17 SHOWS • 4 SPECIAL EVENTSCELEBRATING 40 YEARS!\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n THURSDAY 9/12 @ 6PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n SATURDAY 9/14 @ 1PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n SUNDAY 9/15 @ 10AM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n FRIDAY 9/13 @ 6PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n SATURDAY 9/14 @ 3PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n SUNDAY 9/15 @ 1PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n FRIDAY 9/13 @ 7:30PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n SATURDAY 9/14 @ 5PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n SUNDAY 9/15 @ 3PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n SATURDAY 9/14 @ 9AM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n SATURDAY 9/14 @ 8PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n SUNDAY 9/15 @ 5PM

SUMMARY:Ulysses Owens Jr. & Generation Y
DESCRIPTION:About Ulysses Owens Jr. \nThree time Grammy™ Award-Winning Drummer Ulysses Owens Jr.\, known for being a drummer who (The New York Times) has said “take[s] a back seat to no one\,” and “a musician who balances excitement gracefully and shines with innovation.” Performer\, producer and educator Ulysses Owens Jr. goes the limit in the jazz world and beyond; claiming eight successful albums of his own. \nOwens has also gained special attention for his performances on GRAMMY Award-winning albums by Kurt Elling and The Christian McBride Big Band . In addition to five GRAMMY Award Nominated albums with Joey Alexander\, Christian McBride Trio\, John Beasley’s Monk’estra\, and Gregory Porter. Both Jazziz and Rolling Stone Magazines picked his album “Songs of Freedom\,” as a Top Ten Album for 2019 and in 2021; his most recent Big Band release\, “Soul Conversations\,” was voted the top album in May 2021 by JazzIz Magazine. “Soul Conversations\,” received rave reviews and was added to multiple playlists on Apple Music\, Spotify\, and Sirius XM; and now the band is touring nationally. The Ulysses Owens Jr. Big Band has also been voted “Rising Star Big Band ” of 2022 by Downbeat Magazine. His upcoming eighth album release A New Beat\, will feature his new “Generation Y” Band on the Cellar Jazz record label. The album was produced by Jeremy Pelt and recorded at the legendary Rudy Van Gelder Studios\, in New Jersey. \nAbout Generation Y\nGeneration Y is a band concept that was conceived back in 2019 with the goal promoting the next generation of dynamic talent from the top music conservatories in NYC and beyond. Led by Ulysses Owens Jr. who is a Multi Grammy Award-winning Drummer\, Producer\, Educator\, Author and Cultural Entrepreneur. \nServing at The Juilliard School in the role of Small Ensemble Director within the Jazz Department for the last 8 years\, has given Ulysses a front row seat to this Generation’s top talent. Ulysses Owens Jr.\, has been the driving force behind such great artists as Nicholas Payton\, Christian McBride\, Wynton Marsalis\, Mulgrew Miller\, Joey Alexander and many others. Through his relationship with these great bandleaders he learned of the legacy of Art Blakey and Betty Carter\, both of whom were renowned for their own bands (which became educational institutions) and launched the careers of many of today’s paradigm-shifting musicians on the jazz scene. Generation Y is an updated model of the Jazz Messengers\, and many of these band members also perform in Ulysses’ big band. \nThe band just recorded their debut album “A New Beat” that will be released on the Cellar Live Record label\, in January 2024. The material on this album is a culmination of repertoire from Ulysses’ influences and mentors like Mulgrew Miller\, Roy Hargrove\, George Cables\, and of course the great Art Blakey. This album also features a few original compositions from Benny Benack\, Anthony Hervey\, and the very talented Luther Allison who is an emerging talent performing with Grammy Award-winning vocalist\, Samara Joy as her pianist. The album also features a classic from Louis Armstrong titled Heart Full of Rhythm featuring Milton Suggs\, which learned during his time as the Louis Armstrong Museum ‘“Armstrong Now Artist in Residence.” This album is a culmination of repertoire that has been performed by this band around the world over the last 4 years and to add another level of nostalgia; it was recorded at the Legendary Rudy Van Gelder Studios in Englewood\, NJ. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Ulysses Owens Jr. – Drums\nAnthony Hervey – Trumpet\nErena Terakubo – Alto Saxophone\nTyler Bullock – Piano\nGuillermo Lopez – Bass\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n MUSIC\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n One By One – Ulysses Owens Jr and Generation Y\n \n \n \n \n \n I’m Not So Sure – Ulysses Owens Jr & Generation Y\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Learn More about Ulysses Owens Jr.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 4 DAYS • 17 SHOWS • 4 SPECIAL EVENTSCELEBRATING 40 YEARS!\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n THURSDAY 9/12 @ 6PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n SATURDAY 9/14 @ 1PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n SUNDAY 9/15 @ 10AM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n FRIDAY 9/13 @ 6PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n SATURDAY 9/14 @ 3PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n SUNDAY 9/15 @ 1PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n FRIDAY 9/13 @ 7:30PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n SATURDAY 9/14 @ 5PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n SUNDAY 9/15 @ 3PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n SATURDAY 9/14 @ 9AM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n SATURDAY 9/14 @ 8PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n SUNDAY 9/15 @ 5PM

SUMMARY:Walter Parks and the Unlawful Assembly
DESCRIPTION:About Walter Parks & the Unlawful Assembly\nAs a full 6 piece band or a trio\, The Unlawful Assembly reimagines and tributes historic spirituals and hymns which universally inspire\, empower and unite. Leader/guitarist/singer Walter Parks\, longtime sideman to Woodstock legend Richie Havens\, is joined by featured artists drummer/producer Steven Williams\, Ada Dyer on vocals who’s currently touring worldwide with Bruce Springsteen and/or Andrae Murchison on trombone. \nIn one live-concert experience The Unlawful Assembly entertains and informs while successfully melding roots music of divergent origins. The soundtrack to American black history – old-school spirituals\, gospel\, blues\, and prison work chants intertwine with swamp hollers\, shaped-note hymns and Appalachian reels of white homesteader origin. \nParks’ native northeast Florida swampy feel borrows from southern rock\, jazz\, early 70’s soul and few gospel interpretations that rest joyfully upon a foundation of modern electronic loops. \nReimagined covers and traditionals include: “Wade In The Water”\, “Follow The Drinking Gourd”\, “Down By The Riverside”\, “Steal Away”\, “Old Blind Barnabas”\, “Amazing Grace”\, “Higher Ground” and “Early In The Mornin’”. Walter contributes “Georgia Rice” and a co-write with Stan Lynch of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers on “Shoulder It”. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n THEIR MUSIC\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Down By the Riverside at Jersey City Jazz Festival\n \n \n \n \n \n The Unlawful Assembly • Bridge Over Troubled Water • Ada Dyer Vocalist\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Learn More about Walter Parks & the Unlawful Assembly

SUMMARY:Sirsy
DESCRIPTION:Sirsy\n7pm: SIRSY is a rock\, pop\, and soul duo from Upstate NY. They write honest songs\, full of sing along melodies\, with lots of heart and just the right amount of sass. “It’s edgy-feel-good music that’s fun to watch”. (–The Houston Music Blog). \nThe Boston Globe call SIRSY “the little band with the big sound.” SXSW Music Blog says “SIRSY is NOT simply a two piece\, the sound they make is a head scratching\, WOW!” SIRSY is fronted by charismatic vocalist/ drummer Melanie Krahmer who has “one of the most powerful and flexible voices you’ll ever hear.” (–Times Union) At live shows\, Mel also plays bass on a keyboard with her drumstick & throws in a few mean flute solos too. Guitarist\, and Mel’s husband\, Rich Libutti plays a road worn and well-loved Rickenbacker guitar through a pedal board full of vintage effects. Live\, Rich also plays bass on a pedalboard with his feet. So\, these multi-instrumentalists manage to sound like a full band\, despite there being just two of them. And somehow\, they do it all with big smiles on their faces. It’s clear they love what they do. And that love is contagious when you see them live. You can’t help smiling along with them. Their energetic show often includes stories from the road\, laughter\, dance parties\, and even Rich’s nerdy Star Wars jokes. \n \n

SUMMARY:The Stony Creek Band's 50th Anniversary Party!
DESCRIPTION:with The Switch and The Stony Creek Band\n6:30pm: The Switch is a rock n’ roll band that also calls on blues and funk influences. Known for their powerful and full sound\, they’ll be performing everything from Led Zeppelin to the Allman Brothers to the Meters to BB King to some originals. \n8pm: For 50 years years\, the Stony Creek Band has been one of the most enduringly popular musical groups in the northeastern United States. The Stony Creek Band has thrilled generations of fans with its high energy blend of rock\, folk\, country and bluegrass; a sound that has consistently defied description but is “a product of the landscape as authentically upstate as any Hudson River School painting or sculpture by David Smith” and performed in a manner described by one reviewer as “a ferocious ensemble attack; like a runaway train!”. \nThe Stony Creek Band began with the 1973 meeting of John Strong\, a folksinger/guitarist from the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania and Hank Soto\, a guitarist and songwriter from the Bavarian Alps of Germany. Along with a bass player the Stony Creek Band began life as a folk trio\, touring coffee houses in New York\, Vermont\, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. After moving to the Adirondack mountain hamlet of Stony Creek\, NY the band quickly developed into a 7-piece musical powerhouse featuring drums\, a rock guitarist\, pedal steel guitar and banjo that\, for a time\, was the little town’s largest year-round employer! \nIn the 1980’s the band evolved into its current 5-piece configuration which now includes producer/ singer /songwriter Dave Maswick on bass\, blues hall of fame member Mike Lomaestro on drums\, and noted bluegrass mandolin virtuoso Fred Lantz. Over the years\, the Stony Creek Band has made hundreds (if not thousands) of concert appearances including a live performance on international TV for the closing ceremonies of the Goodwill Winter Games\, an appearance at a New York State gubernatorial inauguration\, a February outdoor appearance at the 25th anniversary celebration of the “Miracle on Ice” (brrrr) and a live performance on NBC’s TODAY show with Meredith Viera and Ann Curry. \nOver the past 50 years\, the Stony Creek Band has evolved from an acoustic trio with roots in traditional folk and country music to a purveyor of American idioms\, and back again. The band’s music is the sound of mature\, seasoned artists who have outlasted the years and their own baser instincts to mentor and encourage younger artists\, enrich their communities and preserve and transmit a living memory. \nPresented in partnership with the Village of Lake George \n

SUMMARY:The Ill Funk Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:The Ill Funk Ensemble\n7pm: A slick mash-up of hip-hop\, neo-soul\, R&B and rock that’s been compared to The Roots\, THE ILL FUNK ENSEMBLE has been described as “soul for the masses” (Technorati.com)\, “airtight on all levels” (JamSphere Magazine)\, “brilliant” (The Signal Magazine) and “about to change the face of hip-hop music” (Indie Band Guru).  \nA fixture of the Albany\, NY music scene for more than 17 years\, ILL FUNK has racked up an impressive resume; winning awards for their original albums\, collaborating with Quincy Jones (famed producer of Michael Jackson’s Thriller)\, and sharing stages with multiple Grammy winners like Naughty by Nature and members of the Wu Tang Clan.  They’ve been featured in dozens of music and entertainment publications\, including Okayplayer\, and have had their music played all over the world.  Few artists in the area can boast this level of accomplishment\, but ILL FUNK remains close to their roots; a club band\, offering an array of original music and classic covers that is as entertaining as it is unique.  It’s for these reasons that THE ILL FUNK ENSEMBLE is repeatedly mentioned as one of the best bands in Upstate New York and will continue to offer a high quality hip-hop\, soul\, pop and R&B experience. \n \n

SUMMARY:Zikina
DESCRIPTION:Zikina\n7pm: Zikina is a group of people who came from across continents and cultures to show that despite all the forces in the world that emphasize our differences and try to diminish and pull us apart\, we can come together to make something beautiful and new. It doesn’t take long for this music to get you dancing\, clapping along\, connecting with the people around you\, and savoring the beauty of the present moment. You might start with curiosity when Uganda native Gideon Ampeire draws you in with a variety of traditional East African instruments that are rare and fascinating to US audiences\, including enanga (zither)\, adungu (harp)\, and kalimba (thumb piano) – all of which he builds himself. \nOnce your interest is piqued by the instruments\, you’ll quickly discover that there’s so much more to the band. Mike Cardozo (guitar\, percussion) improvises intricate melodic conversations with Gideon and dances through the beat with punchy rhythmic lines. Roston Kirk (bass) and Kade Parkin (drums) weave a sonic landscape that flows seamlessly from intense grooves to joyous dance beats to dreamy textures. Gideon’s vocals cut powerfully through the fabric or float lightly above. It all adds up to something completely unique\, yet immediately accessible.

SUMMARY:The Clements Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, July 26\, 2023:\nThe Clements Brothers\n7pm: The Clements Brothers are George and Charles Clements\, identical twins from New England. They’ve been playing and writing music together for as long as they can remember and ‘The Clements Brothers’ marks their first project together since playing in the internationally touring grass-roots band\, ‘The Lonely Heartstring Band’ with whom they put out two albums on Rounder Records. With roots\, rock\, bluegrass\, jazz\, and classical influences\, George (on guitar) and Charles (on bass) aim to capture their singer-songwriter sensibilities in a unique blended voice\, at once enthralling and intimate\, groovy and serene. They are joined by drummer Mike Harmon\, who joined the band after an impromptu late night set at the Ossipee Music festival\, and adds his unique roots-conscious musicality to the group’s evolving sound.  The trio is a fusion of each member’s unique musical journey\, and the result is music all its own\, filled with vocal harmonies\, instrumental virtuosity\, and a genuine love of song. \n \n

SUMMARY:Jazz at the Lake 2022
DESCRIPTION:_______________________________________________________\nFriday\, September 16\, 2022\n_______________________________________________________\nPhoto by Aaron Davis \nSeptember 16 @ 6pm\nChembo Corniel Quintet\nHery Paz – tenor sax / flute\nCarlos Cuevas – piano\nAlex “Apolo” Ayala – bass\nJoel E. Mateo – drums\nChembo Corniel – congas / percussion\nPercussionist & GRAMMY nominee Wilson “Chembo” Corniel was raised in the humble streets of Red Hook\, Brooklyn. It was during these years as a quick-witted youngster that he had the privilege and honor to study with luminaries of the Afro-Caribbean percussion tradition\, such as Tommy Lopez Sr.\, “Little Ray” Romero\, Louie Bauzo and Cachete Maldonado. Chembo honed his skills at The Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts in New York and at the prestigious La Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana\, Cuba under the direction of the great Chucho Valdés.\nHis intense studies with such legends channeled his energy onto a path where he has now created a reputation for himself among musicians and the public. Today\, he is considered as one of the best hard-hitting\, versatile percussionists around. Chembo has toured with many major artists throughout Europe\, Asia\, North & South America\, and the Caribbean. He received a GRAMMY nomination for “Best Latin Jazz Album” for his CD release Things I Wanted To Do.\nAs a part of this evening’s program\, a long-time collaborator and friend\, poet and spoken word artist David Gonzalez will join the group on stage.\n \n  \n  \n@Evening\nRegional jazz favorites playing around town – check back soon for locations!\n_______________________________________________________\nSaturday\, September 17th\, 2022\n_______________________________________________________\n\nSeptember 17 @ 1pm\nGilad Hekselman & Far Star Trio\nGilad Hekselman is one of the leading voices in jazz guitar. Only a few years after his arrival to NY in 2004\, this native Israeli was already sharing stages with some of the greatest artists in the New York City jazz scene including Chris Potter\, Eric Harland\, Fred Hersch\, Mark Turner\, Anat Cohen\, Ari Hoenig\, Esperanza Spalding\, Jeff Ballard\, Ben Wendel\, Gretchen Parlato\, Ben Williams\, Avishai Cohen\, Tigran Hamasyan\, Aaron Parks and Becca Stevens among many others.\nIn May 2019\, Hekselman featured his quartet at the legendary NYC venue The Village Vanguard. He has also been playing all other major jazz clubs in New York City\, including the Blue Note\, The Jazz Standard\, Dizzy’s Club and Smalls. He is constantly touring world-wide and has played most noteworthy jazz festivals and venues including Montreux\, North Sea\, Montreal & SFJazz to name a few.\n \n  \n  \n  \n \nSeptember 17 @ 3pm\nSamara Joy\nWith a voice as smooth as velvet\, Samara Joy’s star seems to rise with each performance. Following her winning the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition\, she has just release her debut recording\, featuring guitarist Pasquale Grasso\, bassist Ari Roland\, and drummer Kenny Washington.\nAlthough having only recently celebrated her 21st birthday\, Samara has already performed in many of the great jazz venues in NYC\, including Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola\, The Blue Note\, and Mezzrow\, in addition to working with jazz greats such as Christian McBride\, Pasquale Grasso\, Kirk Lightsey\, Cyrus Chestnut\, and NEA Jazz Master Dr. Barry Harris.\nGrowing up in New York\, music was a pervasive presence\, due to the inspiration of her paternal grandparents\, Elder Goldwire and Ruth McLendon\, who led the well-known Philadelphia-based gospel group\, The Savettes. Her father toured with the renowned Gospel artist Andrae Crouch\, and her home was filled with the sounds of not only her father’s songs and songwriting process\, but the inspiration of many Gospel and R&B artists\, including Stevie Wonder\, Lalah Hathaway\, George Duke\, Musiq Soulchild\, Kim Burrell\, Commissioned\, and many others.\nSamara’s first exposure to jazz was while attending Fordham High School for the Arts\, where she performed regularly with the jazz band\, eventually winning Best Vocalist at JALC’s Essentially Ellington competition.\nWinning the Vaughan award was transformational for Joy. “I was suddenly on the jazz radar. It’s still bizarre to think of how fast things have progressed.” Since then\, Joy has dug deep to discover her jazz roots\, without losing sight of the innate simplicity that makes her sound shine. Her first album announces the arrival of a young artist destined for greatness.\n \n  \n  \n  \n\nSeptember 17 @ 5pm\nIke Sturm + HEART \nIke Sturm – bass & compositions\nMelissa Stylianou – voice\nGodwin Louis – saxophone\nChris Dingman – vibraphone\nJesse Lewis – guitar\nJohnathan Blake – drums\nBassist and composer Ike Sturm was raised in a musical home in Wisconsin\, learning from his father\, renowned composer and arranger\, Fred Sturm. He moved to Rio as a young man\, where he pursued a multifaceted career in jazz\, popular\, and classical music\, including a six-year performance internship with the renowned Orquesta Sinfónica Brasiliera (OSB).\nAs Vanderlei’s inherited retinitis pigmentosa progressed and his vision deteriorated\, he realized he could no longer continue working in the classical realm\, and proceeded to dedicate himself full-time to playing jazz and other non-classical forms of music. He came to be known as one of the top jazz drummers in Rio\,as well as being a highly regarded player of samba and MPB\, working steadily even after he lost his sight completely.\nHe moved to New York City in 1988\, and quickly became an in-demand drummer on the New York Brazilian music scene. It took over twenty years to truly accept my blindness and develop the ability to see the positive things in everyday life. I try as much as I can to share some of that optimism with everyone I interact with daily. I would hate to think that people feel sorry for me because of my visual impairment. I’m blind\, but so what? I’ve still got music and my own way of seeing things\, thank God. I try to channel that energy and I think it comes through in my playing.”\n \n  \n  \n  \n\nSeptember 18 @ 5pm\nElio Villafranca & The Jass Syncopators\nBorn in the Pinar del Río province of Cuba\, pianist and composer Elio Villafranca was classically trained in percussion and composition at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana\, Cuba. SUMMARY:Mark Gamsjager & The Lustre Kings
DESCRIPTION:The Lustre Kings boast a devoted international fanbase and continue to perform over 150 dates a year\, including regular stops at nightspots\, festivals and casinos like Tip Top Deluxe\, Skinny Dennis and The Continental Club; Viva Las Vegas\, Heritage Folk Festival and the Rockin 50s Fest; and the Potawamoti Hotel. Gamsjager\, a Gretsch guitars endorsee who has taught for the National Guitar Workshop\, has been a guest at prestigious venues ranging from Kennedy Center (Washington DC) to the Montreal Jazz Fest. Beginning with 1995’s Mark Gamsjager Rocks & The Lustre Kings Roll\, the band staked a claim to a modern take on the reverb-driven sounds of early rock\, leaning also on touchstones of country\, blues and R&B. Other artists\, like the famed “Queen of Rock\,” Wanda Jackson\, hear the authenticity in The Lustre Kings. Perhaps that’s why she hired Gamsjager and the group as her backing unit for many tours. “I have worked with many bands around the world through the years\,” Jackson says\, “and none are better than Mark Gamsjager and The Lustre Kings. Their fine showmanship and musical ability make them the greatest in my book. They rock!!” Learn more: https://www.lustrekings.com/
