SUMMARY:Three Quarter North
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, August 2\, 2023:Three Quarter North\n7pm: Eddies Music Award nominees Three Quarter North have performed at over 50 venues in and around the capital district over the last 15 years. This accomplished group plays everything from traditional fiddle tunes to complex original pop weaving acoustic and electric influences into an enticing array of sounds.  Homegrown and raised on tradition\, Three Quarter North exemplifies the best in American roots music. \nLEARN MORE ABOUT THREE QUARTER NORTH  \nTHREE QUARTER NORTH—COMMON GROUND— “This is the third project from this Albany\, New York-based sextet which features mainly the songwriting of bassist Dave Rhodes and guitarist Mark Smith. The group also includes Bob Altschuler (banjo)\, Mark Bagdon (fiddle)\, Nelson Gage (mandolin)\, and Joe Pasco (percussion). Rhodes also plays the kazoo\, piano\, and ukulele. Smith also adds kazoo as well as harmonica. The opening song by Rhodes\, “The One I’m With\,” has a couple of kazoo solos\, giving the tune an old jug band feel. Other Rhodes selections include “Inside Walls\,” “Summer Song\,” and “Some Rivers.” Rhodes and Smith collaborate on “Common Ground” and Smith writes “My Baby Ain’t My Baby Anymore.” Banjo player Altschuler offers the instrumental “Rosebud\,” and the band covers The Byrds’ “Mr. Spaceman” and Hot Rize’s “Nellie Kane\,” both from live performances. Both Rhodes and Smith have delightful voices backed by good harmonies from other members\, as well as some mighty-fine picking by all.” – review in August 2020 Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine \n  \n  \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Summer Song\n by Three Quarter North | from their album Common Ground

SUMMARY:The Clements Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, July 26\, 2023:\nThe Clements Brothers\n7pm: The Clements Brothers are George and Charles Clements\, identical twins from New England. They’ve been playing and writing music together for as long as they can remember and ‘The Clements Brothers’ marks their first project together since playing in the internationally touring grass-roots band\, ‘The Lonely Heartstring Band’ with whom they put out two albums on Rounder Records. With roots\, rock\, bluegrass\, jazz\, and classical influences\, George (on guitar) and Charles (on bass) aim to capture their singer-songwriter sensibilities in a unique blended voice\, at once enthralling and intimate\, groovy and serene. They are joined by drummer Mike Harmon\, who joined the band after an impromptu late night set at the Ossipee Music festival\, and adds his unique roots-conscious musicality to the group’s evolving sound.  The trio is a fusion of each member’s unique musical journey\, and the result is music all its own\, filled with vocal harmonies\, instrumental virtuosity\, and a genuine love of song. \n \n

SUMMARY:Jazz at the Lake 2022
DESCRIPTION:_______________________________________________________\nFriday\, September 16\, 2022\n_______________________________________________________\nPhoto by Aaron Davis \nSeptember 16 @ 6pm\nChembo Corniel Quintet\nHery Paz – tenor sax / flute\nCarlos Cuevas – piano\nAlex “Apolo” Ayala – bass\nJoel E. Mateo – drums\nChembo Corniel – congas / percussion\nPercussionist & GRAMMY nominee Wilson “Chembo” Corniel was raised in the humble streets of Red Hook\, Brooklyn. It was during these years as a quick-witted youngster that he had the privilege and honor to study with luminaries of the Afro-Caribbean percussion tradition\, such as Tommy Lopez Sr.\, “Little Ray” Romero\, Louie Bauzo and Cachete Maldonado. Chembo honed his skills at The Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts in New York and at the prestigious La Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana\, Cuba under the direction of the great Chucho Valdés.\nHis intense studies with such legends channeled his energy onto a path where he has now created a reputation for himself among musicians and the public. Today\, he is considered as one of the best hard-hitting\, versatile percussionists around. Chembo has toured with many major artists throughout Europe\, Asia\, North & South America\, and the Caribbean. He received a GRAMMY nomination for “Best Latin Jazz Album” for his CD release Things I Wanted To Do.\nAs a part of this evening’s program\, a long-time collaborator and friend\, poet and spoken word artist David Gonzalez will join the group on stage.\n \n  \n  \n@Evening\nRegional jazz favorites playing around town – check back soon for locations!\n_______________________________________________________\nSaturday\, September 17th\, 2022\n_______________________________________________________\n\nSeptember 17 @ 1pm\nGilad Hekselman & Far Star Trio\nGilad Hekselman is one of the leading voices in jazz guitar. Only a few years after his arrival to NY in 2004\, this native Israeli was already sharing stages with some of the greatest artists in the New York City jazz scene including Chris Potter\, Eric Harland\, Fred Hersch\, Mark Turner\, Anat Cohen\, Ari Hoenig\, Esperanza Spalding\, Jeff Ballard\, Ben Wendel\, Gretchen Parlato\, Ben Williams\, Avishai Cohen\, Tigran Hamasyan\, Aaron Parks and Becca Stevens among many others.\nIn May 2019\, Hekselman featured his quartet at the legendary NYC venue The Village Vanguard. He has also been playing all other major jazz clubs in New York City\, including the Blue Note\, The Jazz Standard\, Dizzy’s Club and Smalls. He is constantly touring world-wide and has played most noteworthy jazz festivals and venues including Montreux\, North Sea\, Montreal & SFJazz to name a few.\n \n  \n  \n  \n \nSeptember 17 @ 3pm\nSamara Joy\nWith a voice as smooth as velvet\, Samara Joy’s star seems to rise with each performance. Following her winning the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition\, she has just release her debut recording\, featuring guitarist Pasquale Grasso\, bassist Ari Roland\, and drummer Kenny Washington.\nAlthough having only recently celebrated her 21st birthday\, Samara has already performed in many of the great jazz venues in NYC\, including Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola\, The Blue Note\, and Mezzrow\, in addition to working with jazz greats such as Christian McBride\, Pasquale Grasso\, Kirk Lightsey\, Cyrus Chestnut\, and NEA Jazz Master Dr. Barry Harris.\nGrowing up in New York\, music was a pervasive presence\, due to the inspiration of her paternal grandparents\, Elder Goldwire and Ruth McLendon\, who led the well-known Philadelphia-based gospel group\, The Savettes. Her father toured with the renowned Gospel artist Andrae Crouch\, and her home was filled with the sounds of not only her father’s songs and songwriting process\, but the inspiration of many Gospel and R&B artists\, including Stevie Wonder\, Lalah Hathaway\, George Duke\, Musiq Soulchild\, Kim Burrell\, Commissioned\, and many others.\nSamara’s first exposure to jazz was while attending Fordham High School for the Arts\, where she performed regularly with the jazz band\, eventually winning Best Vocalist at JALC’s Essentially Ellington competition.\nWinning the Vaughan award was transformational for Joy. “I was suddenly on the jazz radar. It’s still bizarre to think of how fast things have progressed.” Since then\, Joy has dug deep to discover her jazz roots\, without losing sight of the innate simplicity that makes her sound shine. Her first album announces the arrival of a young artist destined for greatness.\n \n  \n  \n  \n\nSeptember 17 @ 5pm\nIke Sturm + HEART \nIke Sturm – bass & compositions\nMelissa Stylianou – voice\nGodwin Louis – saxophone\nChris Dingman – vibraphone\nJesse Lewis – guitar\nJohnathan Blake – drums\nBassist and composer Ike Sturm was raised in a musical home in Wisconsin\, learning from his father\, renowned composer and arranger\, Fred Sturm. Ike is currently touring and finishing several new albums\, including a large-scale project for choir\, string orchestra and chamber jazz ensemble.\n \n  \n  \n  \n\nSeptember 17 @ 7pm\nCamille Thurman & the Darrell Green Quartet\nAs a composer\, multi-instrumentalist\, vocalist\, and unique interpreter of the jazz tradition\, Camille Thurman is quickly becoming one of the standard bearers for the form\, making a considerable and dynamic contribution to the legacy of jazz while paying tribute to its heroes.\nFluid and powerful on the tenor saxophone and highly inventive as a vocalist\, she also plays bass clarinet\, flute\, and piccolo. He moved to Rio as a young man\, where he pursued a multifaceted career in jazz\, popular\, and classical music\, including a six-year performance internship with the renowned Orquesta Sinfónica Brasiliera (OSB).\nAs Vanderlei’s inherited retinitis pigmentosa progressed and his vision deteriorated\, he realized he could no longer continue working in the classical realm\, and proceeded to dedicate himself full-time to playing jazz and other non-classical forms of music. He came to be known as one of the top jazz drummers in Rio\,as well as being a highly regarded player of samba and MPB\, working steadily even after he lost his sight completely.\nHe moved to New York City in 1988\, and quickly became an in-demand drummer on the New York Brazilian music scene. His versatility has enabled him to shine in performances and recordings with numerous outstanding artists\, including Toots Thielemans\, Airto Moreira and Flora Purim\, Sivuca\, Johnny Alf\, Dom Salvador\, Tito Puente\, Leny Andrade\, Rosa Passos\, Paul Winter\, Arturo O’Farrill’s Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra\, Claudio Roditi\, Bebel Gilberto\, and many others.\nWhen asked about the challenges of being a blind musician\, Vanderlei says: “I try to keep a positive attitude. I had to deal with losing my vision while continuing to work full-time as a musician. It took over twenty years to truly accept my blindness and develop the ability to see the positive things in everyday life. I try as much as I can to share some of that optimism with everyone I interact with daily. I would hate to think that people feel sorry for me because of my visual impairment. I’m blind\, but so what? I’ve still got music and my own way of seeing things\, thank God. I try to channel that energy and I think it comes through in my playing.”\n \n  \n  \n  \n\nSeptember 18 @ 5pm\nElio Villafranca & The Jass Syncopators\nBorn in the Pinar del Río province of Cuba\, pianist and composer Elio Villafranca was classically trained in percussion and composition at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana\, Cuba. In 2015\, Mr. Villafranca was among the 5 pianists hand-picked by Chick Corea to perform at the first Chick Corea Jazz Festival at Jazz at Lincoln Center.\nOver the years Elio Villafranca has recorded and performed nationally and internationally as a leader\, featuring jazz master artists such as Pat Martino\, Terell Stafford\, Billy Hart\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Eric Alexander\, Lewis Nash\, David Murray and Wynton Marsalis among others. As a sideman Elio Villafranca has collaborated with leading jazz and Latin jazz artists including: Chick Corea\, Jon Faddis\, Billy Harper\, Sonny Fortune\, Giovanni Hidalgo\, Miguel Zenón\, and Johnny Pacheco among others.\nElio Villafranca’s album Caribbean Tinge (Motema)\, received a 2014 Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik Nomination by the German Records Critics Award\, as well has been selected by JazzTimes and DownBeat magazines for a feature on their very competitive section Editor’s Pick.\nHe has received a GRAMMY Nomination in the Best Latin Jazz Album of the Year category and received the first NFA/Heineken Green Ribbon Master Artist Music Grant to compose his Concerto for Mariachi\, for Afro-Cuban Percussion and Symphony Orchestra. In 2017\, Elio Villafranca received The Sunshine Award to recognize excellence in the performing arts\, education\, science and sports of the various Caribbean countries\, South America\, Central America\, and Africa.\n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Mark Gamsjager & The Lustre Kings
DESCRIPTION:The Lustre Kings boast a devoted international fanbase and continue to perform over 150 dates a year\, including regular stops at nightspots\, festivals and casinos like Tip Top Deluxe\, Skinny Dennis and The Continental Club; Viva Las Vegas\, Heritage Folk Festival and the Rockin 50s Fest; and the Potawamoti Hotel. Gamsjager\, a Gretsch guitars endorsee who has taught for the National Guitar Workshop\, has been a guest at prestigious venues ranging from Kennedy Center (Washington DC) to the Montreal Jazz Fest. Beginning with 1995’s Mark Gamsjager Rocks & The Lustre Kings Roll\, the band staked a claim to a modern take on the reverb-driven sounds of early rock\, leaning also on touchstones of country\, blues and R&B. Other artists\, like the famed “Queen of Rock\,” Wanda Jackson\, hear the authenticity in The Lustre Kings. Perhaps that’s why she hired Gamsjager and the group as her backing unit for many tours. “I have worked with many bands around the world through the years\,” Jackson says\, “and none are better than Mark Gamsjager and The Lustre Kings. Their fine showmanship and musical ability make them the greatest in my book. They rock!!” Learn more: https://www.lustrekings.com/

SUMMARY:The Spirit of Johnny Cash- Harold Ford\, Our June & The Cash Band
DESCRIPTION:Harold Ford’s voice and physical resemblance to Johnny Cash are unmistakable\, making him a natural as a Johnny Cash tribute artist. Harold Ford grew up in the foothills country between the Berkshire and Green Mountains bordering New York State. Raised on the old American pioneer songs\, at the age of four\, Harold began singing duets and harmonies with sister Dorothy. His father accompanied them on the banjo and Mother followed along with the piano. Music and a pioneering love of America became an integral part of his existence. As an adult\, Harold spent many years driving the cross country roads and corridors of America\, often with family in tow.  Weaving his way north\, south\, east\, west and settling in towns and villages along the way\,  Harold explored the back roads\, country woods and the people of this great land. As a true American figure and artist himself\, Harold Ford’s many experiences make him a storyteller in his own right and lend a deep identification to Johnny Cash’s music. SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: Paul Cebar Tomorrow Sound
DESCRIPTION:Benefitting from years of unassuming and understated hipness\, this Milwaukee based band brings forth a funky\, lyrically charged racket that sits comfortably with soulful sounds the world over. Intricate but free-swinging\, explosive yet intimate\, fresh and green as grass. Taking cues from the dance bands of western Louisiana (and his native Midwest)\, the streets of New Orleans\, touring African and Caribbean combos and the soul\, funk & blues of his youth\, Cebar is a masterful synthesist of rhythmic culture. \nTomorrow Sound are an elite crew of offhand adepts who bring plenty of their own wood to the fire. Drummer Reggie Bordeaux casts his nets with a mystifying subtlety bringing his own fleet-footed refinement and grease. Multi-instrumentalist Bob Jennings\, lends his bandleader the luxury of implying a much larger ensemble with his multi-hued contributions on keys and reeds. Bassist Mike Fredrickson (a distinguished singer-songwriter in his own right) anchors and prods with the best of them.

And this year she’s been nominated again in the Best Traditional Blues category for her 41st album ‘DON’T YOU FEEL MY LEG ~ The Naughty Bawdy Blues of Blue Barker.’ \nDespite her considerable pop music success\, her 50-year career could best be described a long and adventurous odyssey through the various forms of American Roots Music. She began her recording career in 1963 with the Even Dozen Jug Band and shortly thereafter\, joining the very popular Jim Kweskin Jug Band\, touring and recording with them throughout the 60s. In 2011 Maria released Steady Love\, a contemporary electric Blues album that reflects the kind of music she loves to perform live – what she calls “Bluesiana Music” – her own brand of New Orleans-flavored Blues\, R&B and “Swamp Funk.”

SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series double bill: Stony Creek Band and Circle of Willis
DESCRIPTION:Lake George Arts Project’s Summer Concert Series kicks off with a double bill featuring Circle of Willis and the Stony Creek Band. \nCircle of Willis\nThis trio is fronted by the “Mad Fiddler” Nelson Rock\, and also features Michael Kelley on keyboards and vocals\, along with drummer Bobby Assini. \nRock has performed throughout the Northeast and at Mardi Gras in New Orleans along with the Neville Brothers. Kelley is a veteran performer\, having played with many of the northeast’s best bands\, including Blotto\, the Lustre Kings\, John Kribs\, Ernie Williams\, and Mark Emanatian. \nStony Creek Band\n\nThe Stony Creek Band is one of the Adirondack region’s most enduringly popular bands. Since forming in the early 1970’s\, the band has evolved from an acoustic trio playing traditional folk and country to an eclectic Americana outfit featuring exhuberant\, superbly tight eclectic arrangements. Their inspiring songs ring with the unsilenceable voices of everyday heroes. Never saccharine or self-absorberd\, Stony Creek is a band of mature\, seasoned artists who play with an intuition only possible among first-rate artists whose collaboration has spanned four decades. \n The Stony Creek Band performs a combination of country\, blues\, rock\, and bluegrass. It’s members are Hank Soto on electric guitar\,  John Strong on acoustic guitar\, Dave Maswick on bass\, Fred Lantz on mandolin\, and Mike Lomaestro on drums. All are singer/songwriters.  \n~ As described by Caffe Lena’s
