A Storm Event

Yen Ha & Anna Rubin

“A Storm Event” is composed of twelve works on paper by Yen Ha, each measuring 40” x 54”, and accompanied by a 17.5-minute electronic music composition by the composer, Anna Rubin. The drawings, composed of individual paint strokes in fluctuating patterns, are installed flat on the wall, without frames and thus without distraction. The images are visible from every point in the gallery, pulling the viewer into the abstract landscapes and surrounding soundscape. Rubin’s computer-generated composition accompanying the artwork incorporates synthesized sounds, field recordings and processed recordings of a poem “A Storm Event” – written and spoken by Ha in English, French and Vietnamese uniquely for the exhibition.

The exhibition surrounds the viewer both visually and aurally in marks that appear to move on the page while sounds weave through the space. The combination of activated senses deepens the connection to the natural experience of a storm, reminding visitors of the ferocious energy of nature. The delicate materiality of the small strokes on paper is echoed in the pinpoints of sound rippling through the musical composition. Rubin’s musical composition swells and subsides, the multi-layered music evoking the powerful sweep of Ha’s work.
